N.C. Central senior J.T. Thomas sank a 15-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole to post a 3-under-par 69 for a tie atop the individual leaderboard after Friday’s first round of the MEAC Golf Championship at Crosswinds Golf Club.

Thomas carded five birdies and that closing eagle on the 6,848-yard course to lead the Eagles to a team score of 299, good enough for second place at the end of day one.

The Raleigh native’s 69 equals the third-best round by an Eagle since NCCU reinstated its golf program in 2000.

NCCU’s 11-over-par 299 is the third-best team score of the 2013-14 season for the Eagles, who trail leader Bethune-Cookman (2-under 286) by 13 strokes. Tournament host Savannah State is third at 12-over 300

NCCU’s Spencer Jones and Michael Wilson are tied for 11th at 4-over 76  while Andre Jones of Durham is tied for 19th at 6-over 78.
