Bulls steal a win in 11 innings at Norfolk

Apr. 19, 2014 @ 10:23 PM

A walk and two stolen bases by Kevin Kiermaier in the top of the 11th inning set the stage for a two-out infield RBI single by Mikie Mahtook as the visiting Durham Bulls downed the Norfolk Tides 2-1.

Kiermaier walked leading off the 11th and stole second. Wilson Betemit and Vince Belnome both went down on strikes, but with Mahtook and his .383 bat at the plate, Kiermaier stole third. The unorthodox move paid off when Mahtook followed with the game winning infield hit to short.

Steve Geltz, the Bulls third pitcher, got the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Kirby Yates came on to pick up the save in the bottom of the 11th.

The Bulls broke up a scoreless pitching duel between Norfolk’s Mike Wright and Durham’s Matt Andriese in the top of the sixth inning when Cole Figueroa launched a two-out home run, his first of the year, off Wright.

Andriese stood out through his seven-inning starting stint Saturday, holding the Tides to just one run — that in his final inning, the bottom of the seventh.

He struck out seven, allowed four hits and issued one walk.

Andriese has had a tough week. He gave up his scheduled Tuesday night start this week to Enny Romero, after Romero was held out of his Monday night start to save his arm for a possible start with the parent Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday.

When it turned out that former Bull Jake Odorizzi was able to take the mound for the Rays on Tuesday, Romero got the Tuesday start for the Bulls and Andriese pitched two innings in relief.

Because of his limited outing, Andries was able to start a day earlier than normal Saturday.

Andriese was fortunate to leave with a tie game. He gave up three of the four hits he allowed to open the bottom of the seventh as Henry Urrutia, Johnny Monell and Chris Marrero stroked consecutive no-out singles to load the bases.

Andriese fanned Brett Wallace for the first out, but Alexi Casillas’ ground out plated Urrutia with the tying run. Andriese got out of the jam when Cord Phelps grounded out to end the inning.

Until the sixth, offense was almost non-existent. Kiermaier doubled with two down in the top of the first and that was it for the Bulls’ offense in the first five frames. Norfolk got a runner to second with one out in the first and again in the fifth, but stranded both.

Norfolk appeared well positioned to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth against rehabbing Ray Juan Carlos Oviedo. Oviedo struck out the first batter he faced but gave up a one-out single to Julio Borbon and walked Jemile Weeks. Mike Fontenot’s error allowed Urrutia to reach and load the bases. But Oviedo then showed why he’s a major leaguer. He struck out Monell and Marrero to keep the runners where they were.

With the score still tied in the ninth, Kiermaier led off the top half with a single, but Betemit grounded out and Belnome struck out. Kiermaier wound up on third on a wild pitch and Mikie Mahtook walked, but Fontenot flied out to end the threat.

Steve Geltz relieved Oviedo to open the bottom half of the ninth and pitched a perfect inning, striking out two, to send the game to extra innings.

Robby Price walked with one out in the 10th for the Bulls, but was stranded. Geltz shut out the Tides in the bottom half to send it to the 11th when the Bulls finally broke through.

NOTES — Bulls lefthander C.J. Riefenhauser was recalled to the parent Rays before Saturday’s game and righthander Brad Boxberger was optioned from Tampa Bay to Durham. Boxberger is expected to be in uniform for today’s game at Norfolk when Romero (2-1, 3.07) faces Kevin Gausman (0-1, 4.63) at 2:05 p.m.
