Bulls cruise past Knights behind 2 Sands blasts
Jerry Sands drove in four runs with a pair of home runs and four RBI to back a strong start from winning lefthander Enny Romero (2-1) as the Durham Bulls completed a perfect five-game road trip Tuesday night with their seventh straight win, 9-2 over the Charlotte Knights.
Mikie Mahtook went 4 for 5 and Robbie Price 3 for 5 with an RBI as the Bulls exploded for 16 hits.
The Knights opened the scoring in the first on a two-out RBI single by Denis Phipps. A leadoff walk by Tyler Saladino and a one-out single by Josh Phegley off Romero set the table for Phipps.
The Bulls stranded their first baserunner, Mahtook, after his two-out double in the top of the second.
Romero gave up a leadoff single to Alex Liddi in the bottom of the second and Saladino singled to put runners at the corners with two outs, but got Blake Tecotte on a groundout to end the inning.
The Bulls tied it at 1 on a leadoff home run by Eddy Rodriguez off Knights starter Eric Surkamp in the top of the third and then tagged on three more runs on a two-out Jerry Sands homer to take a 4-1 lead.
Price singled and Ray Olmedo walked and were on second and third following Cole Figueroa’s sacrifice when Sands connected.
The Bulls broke it open off loser Surkamp (1-1) in the top of the fourth.
Mahtook singled and was tripled home by Kevin Kiermaier who scored on a one-out single by Price. Figueroa’s two-out single moved Price up and Price scored on Justin Christian’s two-out double that made it 7-1.
A walk to Sands loaded the bases, but Vince Belnome went down on strikes to end the threat.
Deunte Heath relieved Surkamp for Charlotte to start the fifth and immediately surrendered a leadoff triple to Mahtook. But the Bulls failed to score as Kiermaier struck out and Mahtook was erased in a 5-3-5 doubleplay grounder to third hit by Rodriguez.
Romero, who retired seven straight batters after Saladino’s second-inning base hit, got into trouble in the bottom of the fifth after issuing a pair of walks to open the inning, but got the next three batters to escape the jam.
That was to be it for Romero who was relieved by Matt Andriese to start the sixth.
Liddi got to Andriese for a solo home run with two gone in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-2, but the Bulls got it right back on Sands’ second homer of the game, this one off reliever Taylor Thompson in the top of the seventh.
An RBI single by Belnome plated the final run in the top of the eighth and Jeff Beliveau relieved Andriese in the bottom of the inning. Beliveau retired six of the seven batters he faced — striking out four straight at one point — as he closed out the combined 5-hitter.
