NCHSAA wrestling: Upstart Carrboro takes 2nd in DSA 2-A regional
The fierce psyche of the Carrboro Jaguars’ upstart wrestling team and its surprise second place finish at this weekend’s NCHSAA 2-A Mideast Regional is best understood by listening to 160 pounder Carson McKay.
“I kind of heard the crowd ‘Oooohhh,’” McKay recalled of his finals bout against South Granville’s Brysen Thorpe, top-seeded at regionals and ranked No. 9 statewide. McKay had just given up what appeared to be the winning double-leg takedown to Thorpe with 10 seconds remaining in the match.
“I wasn’t going to quit. I wasn’t going to just stand there. I looked up at the clock and saw there were 8 seconds left and I figured that was enough time to make something happen,” McKay said. He stood for an escape and hit a low leg shot for a takedown and the wild 15-14 win.
“That’s the kind of wrestling that I love. That’s what I try to coach my guys to do,” said Carrboro coach DeWitt Driscoll.
“We had several matches this whole tournament just like that, the biggest one being in the finals with (Carrboro 113 pounder) George Carpenter against Quan Le,” Driscoll said. “He’s losing by six with under a minute to go in the 3rd (period) and takes it into overtime and beats him, and it was because he was going to wrestle the whole six minutes, seven if he needed to, and he did it.”
Carpenter was presented the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler award at the Durham School of the Arts' regional for knocking off Le, a runner-up at states last year and ranked No 1 in the state this year. Carpenter is ranked 9th.
Le appeared to have a comfortable lead when he attempted a single-leg sweep. The grapplers got into a wooly scramble and Carpenter came up with the takedown.
“I hit a tilt at the end to get those 3 points” and tie the match, Carpenter said. He nailed a single leg and moved into a Navy ride for the winning takedown in overtime.
“We’ve been working our butts off and it pays off,” said Carrboro’s Stephen Dreher, who took the title at 120 and is ranked No. 3 in the state. “I’m really impressed with our team. We’re sending six out of 10 wrestlers to states, and it’s a big accomplishment for us.”
The turnaround at Carrboro is nothing short of phenomenal. As recently as three years ago the Jaguars were fielding a fledgling team with a roster that looked like Swiss cheese.
Carrboro’s three champs Saturday were more than any other team except defending state champions Trinity, which had four. Their six qualifiers were more than any team except Wheatmore’s seven. Wheatmore won the team title.
Joining McKay, Dreher and Carpenter next weekend in Greensboro will be runner-up Dante Veltri at 106, and fourth-place finishers Sergei Callaham-Bishop at 132 and Magnus Herweyer at 285.
Isaac Little of Durham School of the Arts was the only other champion out of the Carolina 2-A conference, winning at 132. He was a state qualifier in 2011. Other Bulldogs qualifiers were Josh Sawyer, 3rd at 170, and Michael Eubanks, 4th at 220.
Other Carolina 12 wrestlers headed to states are:
Cedar Ridge—Adam Howard, 3rd at 152, Zach Dwinell, 3rd at 160, and Grady Pritchard, 4th at 138; Granville Central—Nathan Bizzell, 2nd at 152, Arie Freeman, 3rd at 126, and Evan Parrott, 4th at 160; Northwood—Michael Queen, 3rd at 138, Jourdon Blackmon, third at 195, and Thaddeus Tallman, 3rd at 285; and South Granville—Brysen Thorpe, runner-up at 160, Brandon Meeks, 3rd at 106, and Austin Brogden, 3rd at 182.
Little beat Jack Snow of Graham, a returning state qualifier, 5-1 in the finals. How?
“Shoot, I don’t know. You’re going and going and you just feel it. You don’t even see it,” Little said. For the record, Snow was riding high in the third period, Little flipped him with a T-neck and slapped on a half for a five-point reversal.
Granville Central’s Nathan Bizzell, top-ranked in the state at 152, dropped a hard-fought 7-6 loss to No. 3 ranked James Ryan of Trinity. Ryan hit a hip toss for a takedown to close out the second period. Bizzell was unable to escape in the third.
