Bulldogs find solution to NCSSM’s barrage
Roxboro Community tried everything to stop N.C. School of Science and Math senior Joseph Chukwu in Monday’s first half.
But after using everything short of a triangle-and-2 on one player, they gave up and simply pressed the Unicorns.
The press proved to be the catalyst in the Bulldogs’ 86-77 victory in the quarterfinals of the Carolina 12 1-A Conference boys’ basketball tournament at NCSSM.
Christian Ingram led Roxboro Community with 26 points, as the Bulldogs used an 11-0 run in the third quarter to get back in the game and a 16-2 run in the fourth to pull away.
Roxboro Community will play at No. 2 seed Voyager Academy in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday.
RC’s first-half zones got them beaten soundly on the defensive glass in the first half. The zones had the added bonus of not slowing down Chukwu, who had 21 points at the half — on his way to a game-high 34 — to help the Unicorns take a 38-31 halftime lead.
“I enjoy watching him myself,” Bulldogs coach Kirk Redman said of Chukwu. “And I’m glad he’s a senior.”
Redman chose to try to keep the ball away from the Unicorn guard with a full-court press, which ended up having the added bonus of speeding the Unicorns right out of their comfort zone.
When NCSSM wasn’t turning the ball over in the second half, it was taking hurried shots that helped Roxboro Community pile up 35 fourth-quarter points.
Forward Terrence Hawley helped spark the 16-2 run to start the fourth quarter with six of his 20 points.
“In the last two weeks, I think we have started peaking,” Redman said. “The players have learned to trust one another and to play together.”
Mickey Drumwright added 15 points for Roxboro Community. Ingram was rock solid at the free throw line, hitting 7-of-8 in the fourth quarter.
NCSSM went 2-of-12 from the line for the game. Michael Kearney added 22 points for the Unicorns, who got nine points and eight rebounds Russell Aryeetey. Cole Simons added two points, eight assists and seven rebounds as NCSSM closes its season.
