Knights outlast Bulls, come back twice for win
Seth Loman singled and came around with the eventual winning run on No. 9 hitter Jim Gallagher’s two-out double in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday night as Charlotte beat the Durham Bulls 5-4.
The Bulls (7-3) twice lost two-run leads in the game and went down 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Relief pitcher Adam Liberatore (0-1) took the loss and Jeff Gray, the third of four Charlotte relievers, got the win to improve to 1-1. Ramon Tronoso picked up the save for the White Sox’s top farm club.
The loss was the Bulls’ second straight and came despite outhitting the Knights 11-9. Both teams played error-free ball.
The Bulls led early, scoring single runs in the first and second innings on RBI singles by Jason Bourgeois and Cole Figueroa, but Charlotte (3-7) came back with a run in the second on a Steve Tolleson sacrifice fly and tied it as a run scored on a double play in the fourth.
Shortstop Hak-Ju Lee put the Bulls up 3-2 with a solo home run in the fifth and Brandon Guyer padded the lead with a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth.
But the Knights came right back again as Brent Morel’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth knotted it at 4.
Righthanded starter Jake Odorizzi gave up all four Charlotte runs to that point, despite chalking up nine strikeouts while allowing only six hits and one walk in 5-1/3 innings.
Liberatore came on with one gone in the sixth and escaped further damage until the bottom of the seventh when he gave up the go-ahead run to Charlotte on the leadoff single by Loman, a sacrifice and Gallagher’s game-winning RBI double.
Kirby Yates replaced Liberatore to start the eighth and gave up a pair of hits but kept the Bulls within one with three strikeouts, the final two coming with runners on first and third.
NOTES — The Bulls on Saturday placed lefthanded pitcher Mike Montgomery on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to April 10. Montgomery is 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA and is on the parent Tampa Bay Rays 40-man roster. He pitched 3 2/3 innings in his only appearance this season, April 7, and got a no decision.
