Just enough offense just right for Bulls
That sacrifice fly ball to center field off the bat of Durham's Robby Price drove in Wilson Betemit in the bottom of the second inning against Buffalo, and that was all the Bulls needed to beat the Bisons and split a doubleheader at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Sunday.
“We crushed them 1-nothing,” quipped an upbeat Charlie Montoyo, the Bulls' manager.
Bulls starter Alex Colome (6-4) allowed three hits and struck out seven batters in six innings.
Raul Valdes (4-4) was on the mound for Buffalo.
The Bulls were 2-3 in the five-game series with the Bisons.
Now the Bulls are on the road for what will be their third doubleheader in five days when they visit the Rochester Red Wings today at 5:05 p.m. to finish a suspended game from July 24 before playing a regularly scheduled contest.
That's a lot of baseball squeezed into a short span of time, but it is what it is, Montoyo said.
“I told the guys, 'Nobody's going to feel sorry for you,'” Montoyo said.
In the suspended game, Rochester leads 1-0 after three innings. The game will resume in the bottom of the fourth, and Durham will be the home team. The Bulls' second game against the Red Wings will be seven innings.
In Game 1 of the Bisons-Bulls set at the DBAP, Wil Myers was 1 for 3 as a designated hitter in his return to Durham's lineup. He's with the Bulls trying to get back in the swing of things after fracturing his right wrist in May.
Myers did not play in Game 2 against the Bisons, but Montoyo said the reigning American League Rookie of the Year is expected to join the Bulls in Rochester both as a designated hitter and in the field.
The Bulls won't be looking for Myers to carry the team, because the guy is just getting back into the game after his injury, Montoyo said.
That said, there's no telling when everything could come together for a guy as talented as Myers, Montoyo said.
“He's Wil, rookie of the year in the big leagues,” Montoyo said.
Myers at the very least will be with the Bulls this week, Montoyo said.
Rays second-baseman Tim Beckham is rehabbing his injured right knee and soon will join the Bulls to continue tuning up, Montoyo said.
