Triple-A All-Star Game: Bulls trio leads IL past PCL

Jul. 18, 2013 @ 12:03 AM

J.D. Martin’s scoreless second inning slowed an early scoring onslaught and helped the International League All-Stars beat the Pacific Coast League All-Stars 4-3 in Wednesday night’s Triple-A All-Star Game at Aces Ballpark.

Martin, the Durham Bulls righthander who leads the International League in wins (11), followed Louisville’s Greg Reynolds to the mound.

Reynolds, 10-2 with a 2.54 ERA for Cincinnati’s top affiliate, allowed three hits and two runs to the PCL stars in the first inning. That allowed the host PCL team to grab a 2-1 lead.

The IL scored three runs in the top of the second inning, thanks to a three-run home run by Indianapolis catcher Tony Sanchez, to move ahead 4-2.

Martin held that lead with his 19-pitch inning of work. Martin issued a one-out walk to Fresno catcher Johnny Monell. But Round Rock’s Joey Butler lined out to right before Martin retired Albuquerque’s Nick Buss on a grounder to end the inning.

Of the 19 pitches Martin threw, 11 were for strikes.

Another Durham Bulls pitcher, Kirby Yates, pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the IL.

Yates struck out Fresno’s Brett Pill, who swung and missed at a 95 mph fastball for strike three. Salt Lake City’s Efren Navarro fell behind with two strikes and took a ball before grounding out to second base.

Colorado Springs’ Ryan Wheeler also grounded out to second base on a 1-2 pitch.

Durham’s Vince Belnome started the game at third base for the IL stars and batted cleanup. Belnome is No. 2 in the IL batting race with a .338 average. He has seven home runs and 55 RBI.

Against the PCL stars, Belnome went 1 for 3 with a single.

In the first inning, when the IL scored a run to take a 1-0 lead, Belnome flied out to left against Oklahoma City pitcher Jarred Cosart. Belnome was also retired on a fly to left in the third inning against Omaha lefthander Chris Dwyer.

In the fifth, facing Tacoma left-hander Brian Moran, Belnome singled with two outs. But Moran, the older brother of former UNC third baseman Colin Moran, induced a pop-up to shortstop from Buffalo’s Mauro Gomez to end the inning.

The PCL stars were unable to catch up after Sanchez’s three-run home run put the IL in front 4-2.

The PCL’s best chance to tie the game came in the fourth inning when Rochester pitcher Andrew Albers allowed singles to Sacramento’s Michael Choice and Round Rock’s Yangervis Solarte to start the inning. A Sanchez passed ball moved runners to second and third with no outs.

Monell drove in a run with a ground ball to first and, with the score 4-3, Solarte moved to third with one out.

But Albers struck out Butler and got Buss on a fly ball to center field to escape with the IL still in front.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s Chris Bootcheck (who played with Durham in 2011), Pawtucket’s Anthony Carter, Yates, Indianapolis’ Vic Black and Columbus’ Preston Guilmet shut out the PCL from there.

Guilmet got the final out for the save.

With the win, the International League will be the designated home team for the Triple-A National Championship game this September.

Next July, the Triple-A All-Star Game will be played at Durham Bulls Athletic Park for the first time.
