Durham Academy alum Mollie Pathman of Duke signs pro pact
The Boston Breakers on Thursday announced the signing of former Duke and Durham Academy forward Mollie Pathman for the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
The Breakers selected the Durham native in the third round (No. 23 overall) of its 2014 NWSL College Draft.
Pathman scored 17 goals and had 29 assists in 87 career games with Duke. She was a member of the U.S. team that won the U-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Japan in 2012, a team that featured Breakers goalkeeper Jami Kranich. She also played for the U.S. in the 2010 U-20 Women’s World Cup.
“I am very honored and excited to be joining the Boston Breakers,” Pathman said. “I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of such an amazing organization with great teammates, coaches, and ownership. I am grateful to have the opportunity to train with and against some of the best players in the world every day. Playing professional soccer is a dream come true and I cannot wait for the season to start.”
Pathman also has international experience with the U.S. U-23 national team. She trained with the squad in April and May 2013. Pathman arrived in Boston in early March and has played in all three preseason games. She scored one goal and tallied one assist in a 6-0 win over Northeastern University on March 24, her preseason debut. Wednesday, April 2, she tallied a goal and an assist in Boston’s 4-1 win over Harvard University. She also saw time (45 minutes) in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Boston College.
“Over the duration of the preseason training camp, Mollie Pathman has convinced us that she is versatile, cool under pressure, and has a talent for learning,” Boston Breakers head coach Tom Durkin said. “Mollie is able to play in any line of our team on the left side of the field, has very good feet, and has no issues with speed of play and the build-up style. She also has raised her level in each of our matches. As the competition gets tighter for roster spots, Mollie has stood out even among the veteran players with her approach.”
Pathman and the Breakers open the 2014 NWSL season April 13 on the road against Seattle Reign FC. They face the Houston Dash Sunday, April 20, in their home opener at Harvard Stadium.
