Bulls thrash RailRiders, end 5-game skid

May. 10, 2014 @ 11:10 PM

The Durham Bulls ended a five-game losing skid Saturday night with a 9-2 thrashing of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at PNC Field.

The Bulls had lost all five prior games on their current eight-game road trip, four at Syracuse and the fifth to the RailRiders. S/WB saw its own six-game win streak come to and end.

The Bulls strung together four consecutive two-out hits in the top of the first to stake Matt Andriese (2-3) to a 2-0 lead.

Kevin Kiermaier and Wilson Betemit each singled and Jerry Sands plated one run with a single and Vince Belnome the second with the fourth single.

The Bulls tacked on a run in the second and three in the third to make it 6-0 off RailRiders’ starter Shane Greene (0-5).

In the second, Ali Solis walked and went to third on Hak-Ju Lee’s base hit. Lee moved to second on a throwing error on the play and Solis scored on Cole Figueroa’s sacrifice fly.

Belnome walked and Justin Christian singled to get the rally going in the third. Olmedo then reached on an error, Belnome scoring on the play and Christian taking third. Lee doubled both runners home.

The damage could have been worse, as Figueroa walked and Kiermaier followed with a single, but Lee was thrown out at the plate on the play for the final out of the inning.

The RailRiders finally got to Andriese in the bottom of the third on a Jose Pirela leadoff homer.

The Bulls answered with three more runs in the fifth. Olmedo, Solis and Lee opened the inning with singles, Lee driving in Olmedo with the seventh run. Betemit walked to load the bases with two outs and Sands drove in a pair with a single for a 9-1 lead.

Jake Thompson came on in relief of Andriese to start the bottom of the sixth and gave up a single to Adonis Garcia and a run-scoring double to Russ Canzler. Canzler was nailed at home trying to score on an Austin Romine single on a throw by rightfielder Jerry Sands to Solis to end the inning.

NOTES — Bulls infielder Robby Price has left the team to attend extended spring training. Replacing him is lefthanded pitcher Braulio Lara, up from Double-A Montgomery. ... Nathan Karns (2-2, 6.96) will start for the Bulls today (1:05 p.m.) against S/WB’s Chase Whitley (3-2, 2.49) in game 3 of the series. Enny Romero (2-4, 5.02) will meet Brian Gordon (2-2, 4.23) in the 12:05 p.m. finale Monday. ... The Bulls return home Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. to face Charlotte.
