N.C. A&T women rip NCCU as Conerly battles foul problems

Early foul trouble for N.C. Central’s Khyra Conerly allowed archrival N.C. A&T to create enough space for a 59-47 road win Wednesday.

Conerly scored NCCU’s first eight points before picking up two fouls and a seat on the bench.

“I started out really well, but what killed me, really, was foul trouble,” Conerly said. “I got two stupid fouls in the first half, which made me sit out and really hurt my team.”

NCCU shot 36.4 percent from the floor in the first half, not nearly enough to keep up with the Aggies, who made 51.7 percent of their attempts. Both teams took roughly the same number of shots. A&T simply got more to go down.

“I don’t think their defense is what killed us,” Conerly said. “I just think giving them second opportunities is what hurt us the most.”

NCCU coach Vanessa Taylor said A&T’s Aprill McRae (20 points, 6 rebounds) had her way too often down low, and Conerly’s first-half foul trouble explains the Aggies’ 15-point halftime lead.

“We had to play about 14 minutes without her in the first half,” Taylor said.

McCrae was A&T’s only double-figure scorer. A&T’s Tracy King led all rebounders with 12 boards.

Jessica Freeman (19 points) was NCCU’s leading scorer.

Late in the second half, NCCU’s Tisha Dixon fed Racquel Davis for a layup that cut A&T’s lead to 9 points. Then a nice, little step-back layup by Conerly made it a 53-46 game with 4:10 to play.

Conerly is tough with the ball in her hands, Freeman said.

“She’s a great driver. She’s so strong,” Freeman said. “She can finish and get to the basket. No one can really stop her, to be honest with you, when she’s going to the basket, especially with that spin move. You can see that it’s hard to guard that. I’m so glad we’re not the ones playing her on the other team.”

The other team next time is Coppin State at 2 p.m. Saturday.

“Coppin State has to pay for this,” Conerly said.
