Tigers, Panthers come up short at golf regional

STONEVILLE — The Chapel Hill and Orange boys’ golf teams finished 12th and 13th, respectively, Thursday in the 13-team Mideast 3-A Regional field at Deep Springs Golf and Country Club in Stoneville.

The top three team finishers in the regional advanced to Monday and Tuesday’s 36-hole state championship tournament, as well as the top three individual finishers whose teams did not advance.
Burlington Williams was the team winner at 18-over 306, followed by Rockingham County (315) and Southern Lee (321). Chapel Hill shot 364 and Orange 431.
David Cho of Chapel Hill posted the best score among area golfers at 12-over 84 but finished eight shots behind the final individual qualifier.
Other Chapel Hill scores included Jason Chon 88, Jack Haskins 91, Leon Pickles 101 and Zack Walton 107.
Orange scores were Try Balmer 103, Andrew Carey 106, Brad Barbee 110, Josie Ferrell 112, Colin Ware 115 and Matt Ulczynski 140.

GIRLS’ SOCCER
Franklin Academy 2, NCSSM 1

DURHAM — Nikki Bell’s goal in overtime gave Franklin Academy a 2-1 win over N.C. School of Science and Math in the state girls’ soccer playoffs Thursday.
Ryan McCord netted the only goal for the Unicorns (15-1-3), while Mia Shanq scored Franklin’s second-half goal.
