DeSelm, Tigers finish third in state 3-A swimming
She may be a freshman in a small frame, but Claire DeSelm made a big splash for the Chapel Hill Tigers at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Triangle Aquatic Center on Friday.
And she credits a ripple effect from her teammates’ enthusiasm for helping her to take third place in the 100-yard butterfly, another third in the 200 individual medley and second-place times as part of the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.
“It means a lot to me to be a part of such a wonderful team, and it was really exciting for my first year,” DeSelm said.
And no wonder. Chapel Hill finished third in the state finals in both boys and girls competition.
DeSelm said “the desire to want to do well and win for the people around me” is what propelled her “because I know they’re doing their best for me.”
And it showed, especially in her 200 IM.
“This morning, I had a best time, and then this afternoon I had another best time by two seconds,” she said.
Sophomore Anabelle Durham was part of those runner-up relay teams, including the 200 medley team that included DeSelm, Jennifer Liu and Kaitlin Jones.
“We had our best time in the relay by a lot, so that was good,” Durham said. “I had a best time in the 200 free.”
Durham finished fourth in the 200 freestyle and took third in the 100 backstroke.
“We knew that winning would be a long shot,” Durham said of the team chase.
Powerhouse Charlotte Catholic won its 12th straight title.
“So we were hoping to get second but knew that would be a really, really hard fight,” Durham said of trying to surpass Marvin Ridge. “But getting a third, we’d be happy with that, too.”
“Our goal at the beginning of the year was to be in the top three for both men and women,” first-year Chapel Hill coach Steve Riegler said.
“We’re real proud of our group of seniors on the guys’ side,” Riegler said. “Sam Freedberg had a good night, ... leading the way for our men.”
Freedberg was seventh in the 200-yard individual medley.
“I’m not surprised by anything these guys do,” Riegler said. “I kind of expected them to perform at a high level. Claire, even though she’s a freshman, she’s a good year-round swimmer, so we expected her to be top three in her events, which is what she did.”
“The boys in that last (400 freestyle) relay, three of those four boys weren’t even scheduled to be in that event. But they were swimming so well at the meet, I made the change and they rewarded that change with our best time on the season.”
Junior Kaitlin Jones nailed a third-place in the 100 breaststroke and ninth in the 50 freestyle, in addition to her second-place finishes on the relay teams.
“I thought our team did really well as a whole,” Jones said. “I did my best and I know everyone else tried their hardest. I thought we ended up doing really well and I was proud of our team.
“We’re a pretty tight-knit team and we have a lot of fun together. I think we work well together. I think third place is pretty good.”
“I had no idea high school swimming would be like this,” DeSelm said. “It’s such a blast.”
