Outlaw’s passes help Rockets topple Knights

Anyone expecting a scoring battle between PAC-6 stars Tyrone Outlaw and Ricky Council was sorely disappointed by Roxboro Person’s 62-50 shutdown of Northern on Wednesday night.
In the girls’ game that opened the doubleheader, Northern routed Person 51-28.
Outlaw scored 12 points, among his lowest outputs of the past two seasons, and Council managed 17 despite ice-cold shooting.
But Outlaw, the target of every defense Person (12-8, 6-2 PAC-6) faces, was happy to give the ball up when the double and triple teams came at him. The 6-6 senior finished with 10 assists, his passing leading to open layups that sealed the win.
Council, a 6-5 junior with a smooth shooting stroke past the 3-point line, couldn’t buy a bucket most of the night as he faced a four-man rotation of Person defenders.
He hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter when the game already had been decided, capping a night in which he was held to five field goals in all — a 12-foot jumper and a pair of layups.
“We rotated four people on him to keep fresh people and fresh legs on him all night,” Person coach Charles Dacus said. “When (Council) starts heating up, he and the team get better. We knew that and tried to slow him down.”
Outlaw averages a double-double almost every night, but the wing once rang up those figures in points and rebounds. But with more help in the low post this season, Outlaw used his passing to reach the plateau Tuesday.
He led Person in rebounding with seven, but Devin Scoggins added six as the Rockets dominated Northern 33-25 on the boards. Kentrell Barkley, a 6-5 forward who finished with 13 points, led Northern with 11 rebounds.
Down 29-20 at the half, Person wing Logan Coats stuck a dagger in any Northern (8-8, 2-5) comeback hopes with three 3-pointers in the third quarter. He added a layup in the period, scoring 11 of his 13 points in that span.
In the girls’ game, Northern opened with a 12-3 run that set the tone. A pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter by Brianna McLamb kept the Rockets in it, trailing 12-8, but Northern outscored Person 16-5 in the second quarter and the game was never close after that.
Freshman Rhianna Council scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and posted four steals to lead Northern (11-5, 5-2), which also got eight points and a team-high nine rebounds from star junior Zuri White.
Christina Harris scored 11 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds for Person (0-8, 3-17).
“We were tired after a rough one (54-50 win at Jordan) last night,” said Northern coach Pamela Adams, who took a year’s sabbatical from coaching to care for a sick relative. “But we’re headed in the right direction. The key is discipline, learning to play as a team and learning that no one kid is the team.”
NOTES — Person is third in the boys’ PAC-6 standings behind Jordan (8-0) and Hillside (4-1). The Rockets play a key league game Friday at Hillside, which lost both regular-season games against Person a year ago before stopping them in the PAC-6 Tournament final.
