Nathan Karns brilliant as Bulls shut down Norfolk 3-0
Nathan Karns threw seven innings of two-hit shutout ball to give his beleaguered bullpen a rest and the Durham Bulls beat the Norfolk Tides 3-0 here Friday.
The win was the Bulls’ second straight, both over Norfolk. Karns combined with two relievers on a three-hit shutout, striking out a combined 13 and walking one.
Karns (2-1, 5.59), who came into the game with an 8.76 ERA, was outstanding. He retired the first six batters he faced before hitting David Adams with a pitch leading off the bottom of the third.
Adams was immediately erased on a double-play ball. Karns followed with his first walk of the game, but stranded the runner there.
Karns gave up Norfolk’s first hit in the fourth — a one-out single by Henry Urrutia — but Urrutia was immediately erased on a double play. Karns also gave up a one-out single to Ivan De Jesus in the sixth but struck out Julio Borbon and Cord Phelps keep him at first.
Karns didn’t allow a runner to reach second base in his seven-inning stint, striking out nine while walking one.
The Bulls had opportunities to score off Norfolk starter Suk-min Yoon (0-1, 9.49) but managed just two runs in the first six innings — a third inning leadoff homer by Mike Fontenot, his first of the season — and another in the fourth when Urrutia let a single by Roman Ali Solis get away from him allowing Jerry Sands, who’d singled, to score from first. Solis was stranded after reaching third on the error.
Kevin Kiermaier doubled with one out in the fifth but didn’t score and the Bulls loaded the bases with two down in the sixth and again came up empty.
The Bulls scratched out another unearned run thanks to a Norfolk error in the seventh. Kiermaier reached on an error leading off, went to second on a walk to Cole Figueroa, stole third and scored on Wilson Betemit’s sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Sands and Vince Belnome followed with singles, but Figueroa was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on Belnome’s base hit to end the inning.
Alexi Castilla singled off relief pitcher Adam Liberatore with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but Liberatore fanned De Jesus for the third out.
Jeff Beliveau relieved Liberatore to open the bottom of the ninth and Norfolk went down in order, the final two batters by strikeout, as Beliveau picked up his first save of the season.
