No. 3 Syracuse takes down No. 1 UNC women's lacrosse
Third-ranked Syracuse (13-1, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) got seven goals from Kayla Treanor and defeated top-ranked North Carolina (12-2, 5-1), 12-9, on Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse out-shot the Tar Heels 31-16 and overcame a career-high 13 saves by UNC freshman Caylee Waters, who made her third consecutive start in the cage.
Syracuse now has won seven consecutive games and ties the Tar Heels atop the ACC standings with the victory. Carolina closes its ACC season on Wednesday night at home against Duke. Syracuse will finish its inaugural ACC season next Saturday at Notre Dame. Despite the loss, UNC has won 16 of its last 18 outings.
Sydney Holman led Carolina with two goals and two assists, while Abbey Friend scored three goals to move past Becky Lynch into second place in UNC history with 231 career points (trailing only Corey Donohoe’s 256). Aly Messinger, Carly Reed, Molly Hendrick and Taylor George each scored single goals for Carolina.
In addition to Treanor’s seven goals, Syracuse’s Alyssa Murray had a goal and four assists and Amy Cross scored twice. Gabby Jaquith added a goal and an assist and Katie Webster scored one goal for the Orange.
Syracuse led 6-3 after the first half, streaking out to big advantages in shots and draw controls against the Tar Heels. The Orange scored to go up 7-3 shortly into the second half. Three consecutive Carolina goals from Messinger, Holman and Geoge pulled the Tar Heels within a goal at 7-6, only to see SU score back-to-back goals of its own to go back up by three at 9-6 with 16:46 to play.
Three straight Tar Heel goals (two by Friend) tied it up at 9-all with 12:27 left, but Syracuse held Carolina scoreless the rest of the way, getting two goals from Treanor and one from Cross down the stretch.
Carolina will return to action on Wednesday night against Duke in Chapel Hill before completing the regular season on Saturday afternoon against Towson. Both of those games will be played in Kenan Stadium while Fetzer Field hosts the ACC Track and Field Championships.
