Bulls drop 4th straight as Chiefs rake Andriese

Jun. 21, 2014 @ 03:57 PM

Syracuse put good wood on the ball all night in an 8-2 win over the Bulls at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Friday, extending the Bulls’ losing streak to four games.

Rain showed up in the bottom of the ninth inning, too late to save the Bulls from all of those hits the Chiefs showered on them.

Syracuse smacked 14 hits and in the process tagged a loss on Bulls right-hander Matt Andriese (6-4).

Chiefs righty Josh Roenicke (3-3) picked up a win.

The Bulls made meaningful contact at the plate, too, but most of those eight hits arrived later in the game when the home team was deep in the hole and failed to turn them into runs.

The Chiefs hammered Andriese in both the second and third innings, Brandon Laird and Zach Walters using those occasions to belt two-run home runs.

In the fifth, Syracuse’s Tyler Moore doubled to drive in Steven Souza Jr., drawing the curtain on Andriese, who was relieved by left-hander C.J. Riefenhauser.

Andriese gave up nine hits and four runs, all of them earned.

The Chiefs figured they’d pick on Riefenhauser, too. Brian Goodwin got him for a triple that scored a run. The Chiefs added three more runs before allowing the Bulls to get back inside their dugout to try to regroup.

Syracuse was up 8-0 and had accumulated a dozen hits.

The Bulls finally scored in the bottom of the sixth when Jayson Nix sacrificed to center field, bringing in Mikie Mahtook.

Durham might have done a little more damage if it weren’t for some bad base running. Vince Belnome doubled to right field and kept digging, pushing off the second base bag and sprinting toward third. Durham Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo gestured hard for him to slide. But Belnome wouldn’t get dirty and was gunned down from right field by Souza.

In the seventh, a throwing error by Walters, the Chiefs’ second-baseman, allowed Curt Casali to arrive home with the Bulls’ second run.

NOTES — Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Brandon Guyer (fractured thumb) completed his rehab assignment and was recalled to the Rays from the Bulls on Friday. ... The Chiefs and Bulls play the second game of their four-game homestand tonight at 7:05 p.m. ... Game 3 is Sunday at 5:05 p.m. and Game 4 is Monday at 1:05 p.m. ...
