Odorizzi, Bulls shut down Tides in front of huge DBAP crowd

Aug. 24, 2013 @ 10:55 PM

Durham Bulls starter Jake Odorizzi threw the first seven innings of a no-hitter against Pawtucket on May 5, yet his performance in Saturday night’s 3-0 win over the Norfolks Tides was even more impressive to his manager.

A crowd of 11,536, the third-largest in the history of Durham Bulls Athletic Park, saw Odorizzi (9-6) strike out 11 batters while giving up three hits and one walk.

“That’s the best he’s thrown this year,” Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo said. “I mean, that’s a good lineup over there, and he made it look easy. His ball was (rising), ... boom. ...

“That was his best outing since Pawtucket.”

Josh Lueke pitched the ninth inning, giving up one hit and recording one strikeout to post his 16th save of the season.

“And of course there was Lueke at the end,” Montoyo said. “A three-run lead is not that much against that club.”

And the Bulls (83-51) managed just five hits off a pair of Norfolk pitchers, starting with knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa (2-4). He also yielded just three hits, but the Bulls were able to capitalize on three leadoff walks to score their runs including the final pair on two-out singles by Kevin Kiermaier and Shelley Duncan.

“Those were big two-out hits we got today,” Montoyo said. “I heard that guy’s been pitching great, the knuckleballer. That’s the thing about knuckleballers: You never know which one is going to show up, (and) the good one showed up today.”

Both Montoyo and Odorizzi credited catcher Chris Gimenez for controlling the flow of the game.

“It felt good; everything was working tonight,” Odorizzi said. “I threw bunch of strikes to get guys out early. Me and (Gimenez) went over the game plan and stuck with it the whole time. We got the game plan right and kept it simple.”

Vince Belnome drew a leadoff walk in the second inning off Gamboa and moved to second on an infield single by Leslie Anderson. When Shelley Duncan lined out, Norfolk third baseman Alex Liddi threw wildly when he tried to double off Belnome at second, allowing him to take third. Mike Fontenot’s single to right plated Belnome for a 1-0 lead by Durham.

The Tides broke up Odorizzi’s perfect game with a two-out walk by Chris Snyder in the third, then Chris Dickerson’s grounder off the glove of Fontenot was Norfolk’s first hit. But Dickerson went to the dirt when he tried to reverse direction and was tagged out by Odorizzi, who was covering first base.

Durham added a run in the fifth when Fontenot walked, stole second on the slow delivery of Gamboa’s knuckleball, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a two-out single to right by Kevin Kiermaier.

Ryan Roberts opened the sixth with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch, then scored on a two-out single by Duncan off Tides reliever Mike Belifiore for a 3-0 lead. Fontenot followed with a base on balls, and Gimenez beat out an infield single to load the bases before Evan Frey grounded into a forceout to end the inning.

Norfolk’s Henry Urrutia sliced an opposite-field double down the line in left with two out in the seventh for the only extra-base hit of the night, but Odorizzi struck out Jason Pridie for the second time to end the threat.

“They’re a free-swinging team, ... so I just had to make some good pitches ... and keep my pitch count down,” Odorrizi said. “It doesn’t always go that way, and I think everybody knows that.”

Odorizzi notched two more strikeouts in the eighth before giving way to Lueke after throwing 101 pitches.

“It was an easy 101,” Montoyo said. “I wasn’t hesitating to send him back in the eighth inning. ... They were on the same page, him and Gimenez. That was good to see.”
