Annual Russell E. Blunt Invitational track meet under way

Jul. 19, 2014 @ 06:04 PM

Faith Ross of the Chesapeake, Va., Western Branch Track Club set a 400-meter hurdles meet record in the girls 15-16 age division at the 37th annual Russell E. Blunt East Coast Invitational track meet on Friday. But she had to pass three of her fleet-footed teammates to do it.

“Their hurdlers got first, second, third and fifth,” said host Durham Striders coach and meet director Frank Davis. “They basically run for the same high school, and they run together in the summer. That’s definitely a team to watch.”

The competition, featuring more than 1,500 participants from 80 teams from around the U.S., Bermuda, and Puerto Rico, resumes at Durham County Memorial Stadium at 9 a.m. today and continues at 9 a.m. Sunday at Durham County Memorial Stadium.

Action each day is expected to conclude at about 6 p.m.

Ross clocked in at 1:00.73, edging the record of 1:00.76 set in 2005 by Leslie Njoku of Hoboken, N.J., who was a three-time high school All-American ranked third in the nation and later ran collegiately for Georgia Tech.

Three other meet records were toppled Friday.

Tristan Flater of the Charleston, W. Va., Capital City Striders had a milestone pole vault leap of 4.72 meters (15.48 feet) in the boys 17-18 age group. It eclipsed the 4.71 meter (15.45 feet) record set in 2007 by Matt Shuler of Fayetteville, who later competed at the University of South Carolina.

Flater, a Canadian national competing out of West Virginia this summer, “got to the point where he was attempting to break the Canadian record. He didn’t make it but he came close,” Davis said.

Chesney Ward of the Greensboro Pacesetters smashed the pole vault record in the girls 15-16 division with a 3.35-meter leap (10.99 feet). Lindsey Bren of Swansboro, a 2013 North Carolina 2A high school championship runner-up, set the previous mark of 2.74 meters (8.98 feet) in 2012.

Eight-year-old Deja Brooks of the Durham Striders crunched the 8 and under girls shot put record with a heave of 5.85 meters (19.19 feet), passing the 2012 record of 5.35 meters (17.55 feet) set by her teammate Jaylond Rogers.

Davis said the caliber of competition is “high level” because “some of these kids have been on the World Team representing the United States,” and there are others who have qualified for nationals. “We have a bunch ourselves.”

The Durham Striders dominated the recent USATF Youth National Championships at the University of Indiana, winning the Overall Championship, the men’s and women’s titles.

The Striders won 14 individual national titles in 14 events, captured 27 second-place finishes, and placed 48 of 55 athletes who competed in the Top 8. They will take 41 qualifiers to the USATF Junior Olympic Championships in Houston, Texas, next week.

Despite that powerhouse showing, Davis isn’t predicting a Striders win at the Blunt.

“We’re always in the hunt, but you have some really good teams in there,” Davis said. “You have standouts at all levels.”

That attracts college coaches from NCAA Division I and II.

“That’s typical for coaches to be there. I talk to the coaches and they tell me who they’re looking at. They get a chance to actually talk to the parents or maybe talk to the kids face to face,” Davis said.

Some of the participants “have already made a name for themselves, so the college coaches know about them,” Davis said. “Then you have sleepers, too, kids who are just beginning to reach their potential, so coaches see that too.”
