Jordan, Person, Orange host wrestling tournaments

Jan. 05, 2013 @ 11:41 PM

Corinth Holders, a scrappy, senior-laden 2A team from Johnston County, was king of the mat at Saturday’s Bull City Throw Down. The Pirates upended 4A host Jordan and breezed to a 5-0 finish as the only unbeaten squad in the seven-team duals tournament that featured 15 state-ranked grapplers.
Jordan finished 4-1, the vastly improving Carrboro Jaguars were 3-2 and injury-decimated Cedar Ridge went 2-3.
“We’ve got seven seniors in our starting lineup. The way I look at it, we can carry five to seven to eight guys to (the state individual championships),” said first-year coach Eric Wischhusen, a two-time state placewinner at Southern Nash High School who graduated from East Carolina last year. Corinth Holders is in the Northern Carolina Conference and finished the day with an overall 19-2 record.
The Pirates’ match against Jordan “was an exciting one,” Wischhusen said. “We went up big early, and Jordan came storming back late. It came down to the very last match and our guy (138-pounder Tyler Johnson) was down and we needed him to win. He was down 7-2 and turned around and pinned the guy (Allal Kartaoui). That was huge for us.”
“No disrespect to them at all, but I thought we wrestled flat,” said Jordan coach Philip Davanzo. “These guys work so hard, they train so hard, that’s the frustrating part. They’re executing some great stuff, but then they get down on themselves.”
“We saw some fight from some freshmen” throughout the day, Davanzo said. “We saw some good execution of technique, so overall we’re 4-1, and we bounced back after getting beat.” Spencer Service (120), Robbie Tomasic (126), Kaleel Gainey (170) and Tyrece Jones (182) all went 5-0.
Davanzo also noted that with five more wins, Service will join Tomasic in the 100-win club. Tomasic reached the milestone at the Tiger Classic last weekend.
“We’ve got a huge conference match against Hillside on Wednesday. We’re approaching it as our biggest match of the year,” with conference matches against Person and Riverside after that, Davanzo said. Jordan is now 12-3.
Carrboro coach DeWitt Driscoll found lots to like about the Jaguars’ performance, especially considering he had a couple of backups on the mat due to ill starters.
“A couple of guys I was really proud of. Trenton Davis is actually backup for me at 120. Our normal 120-pounder, Stephen Dreher, is sick today, and Trenton went 5-0 and did exceptionally well,” Driscoll said. “George Carpenter (113) also went 5-0, a strong performance for him. Dante Veltri, a freshman at 106, came in 4-1 and had a 1-point match with a kid from Corinth Holders who only had like three losses on the season.”
Carrboro, 7-4, travels to Granville Central for a Carolina 12 1-A/2-A Conference match on Tuesday.
“It’s a big turnaround over the last couple of years,” Driscoll said. “The first year we had one win the whole year. Last year we had like three or four wins.”
Cedar Ridge coach Steve Redmon said the team highlight was its “good, solid victory” against Eastern Alamance. The Red Wolves came into the tournament with three vacant weights, and ended up forfeiting five weight classes after their 220- and 285-pounders suffered match injuries.
“We had a couple of our captains look real good, Adam Howard (152) and Brendan Way (145),” Redmon said. “I was happy to see those guys wrestle real tough, as you would expect from two senior leaders.” Howard was 5-0, with a major decision, four pins and 28 team points. Way was 4-1 with three pins, a forfeit and 24 team points.
But he said he “really got a big kick” out of backup freshmen Grady Pritchard (138). “He wrestled tough, had the intensity that is really greater than his years of experience and his age, and seeing that spark in a freshman, that tells me there’s a potential of greatness,” Redmon said.
The Red Wolves, now 4-7, will host Northwood in a Carolina 12 conference match on Wednesday.
