No moral victories: Lady Eagles fall to 0-22, 0-9 MEAC against FAMU

Down six points at halftime, winless N.C. Central looked in it to win it against Florida A&M in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on Saturday.

But 12 turnovers later — the Lady Eagles lost the ball 11 times in the first half — NCCU let another one get away.

FAMU got 22 points from Jasmine Grice in a 63-50 win in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

NCCU (0-22, 0-9 MEAC) shot the ball pretty well, hitting 41.5 percent of it shots, and the Eagles collected 10 more rebounds than the Rattlers (9-13, 6-3 MEAC), but NCCU coach Vanessa Taylor wasn’t talking moral victories.

“We can see that offensively we’re sharing the ball a little bit better,” Taylor said. “Defensively, right now, we’re giving up too many points.

“We take pride in our defense, and they know that.”

NCCU redshirt freshman Kaylah Blount had a game-high 10 rebounds after pulling down 14 on Monday against Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Blount’s board work has been creating offensive opportunities for the team, Taylor said.

Taylor said NCCU freshman Aja Hoyle, who led the team with 16 points, has found a nice groove.

Hoyle said she had to adjust to the college game “It’s a different pace, and you’ve got to be smarter, because everybody’s just as quick as you,” Hoyle said. “They can make the same moves as you. You’ve got to outthink them.”

Blount hadn’t even planned on playing basketball at NCCU. She was a team manager last season for the Lady Eagles.

When the injury bug bit the Lady Eagles before the season started, Blount, who played high school basketball, decided to try out for the squad.

“Just because I’m a walk-on doesn’t mean I let scholarship players walk over me,” Blount said. “We as a team, we talked about it. It was like, ‘You’re a walk-on. Play like you’re on scholarship. So pick it up and let’s go.’”
