Knights complete sweep of Wildcats

Northern’s patience on offense paid off with a big PAC-6 win over East Chapel Hill on Tuesday.
The Knights worked, flexed and eventually found open shots against the Wildcat zone in a 64-48 final at ECH.
Ricky Council II was one of three Knights to score in double figures, finishing with a game-high 24 points.
The Northern girls’ team also cruised in the opener behind 14 points from Zuri White and eight from Rhianna Council in a balanced 49-30 victory. Ali Cyr-Scully led ECH with 13 points.
“Patience,” Northern coach Ronnie Russell said was his team’s offensive gameplan. “We knew they would try to keep it low-scoring and that they’d come out in a zone. We wanted to be patient and work to get good shots.”
The Knights held ECH to just four second-quarter points and pulled away in the third period to build a 20-point lead entering the fourth.
It’s a good thing they kept up the scoring pace, because ECH’s Justen Best caught fire from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter. Best hit six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, seven for the game, on his way to 23 points.
“We played good defense until the end when we turned Best loose,” Russell said. “He’s a good shooter, and he hit a couple of them with people hanging off him.”
Patience was in short supply for the Wildcat offense before Best’s outburst.
“The biggest part of our offensive problems was a lack of patience,” Wildcats coach Ray Hartsfield said. “We didn’t control the tempo of the game. Transition killed us.”
The easy buckets allowed Kourtney Farrow (13 points) and Kentrell Barkley (12) to join Council II in double figures.
“That was one of our best games executing of the season,” Russell said. “We’re getting better every game.”
