NCCU rides Kidd's double-double to 7th straight MEAC win, 8th overall

Feb. 03, 2013 @ 12:02 AM

A total team effort was the recipe for success for N.C. Central as Jeremy Ingram’s 20 points and Stanton Kidd’s fourth double-double of the year combined with a stellar defensive performance lifted the Eagles past Delaware State 54-43 Saturday.

The win ties the longest winning streak for the maroon and gray since the 1996-97 campaign when the Eagles won eight straight games to start the season.

Trailing 4-1 just minutes into the game, the first of Ingram’s three three-pointers provided just the boost for the Eagles to go on a 10-2 run to grab the early 11-6 lead with 13:13 to go in the first frame.

Four minutes later, Ingram’s second shot from-the-outside put the maroon and gray up by double-figures for the first time all day at 21-10 with 8:48 remaining.

The biggest blow thrown by NCCU came with 5:19 left in the first half when junior Alfonzo Houston (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) drove to the basket recording the hoop-and-the-harm putting the Eagles up 26-13.

A minute later, an Emanuel Chapman jumper gave NCCU its largest lead of the first half at 28-15 with 4:13 left and the Eagles ended up taking a 34-21 lead into the locker room with the momentum intact.

Despite having to sit because of early foul trouble, Ingram ended the first half with 11 points in only 12 minutes of action, shooting 3-for-4 from three-point range.

DSU shot just 9-of-25 (36 percent) from the field in the first half, 2-for-10 from three-point range in most part because of the Eagles solid defensive game plan.

The second half had its share of drama as the host Hornets came out with some intensity cutting the double-digit margin to four at 37-33 following a Marques Oliver jumper with 13:27 to go.

Head coach LeVelle Moton and his squad responded by scoring on the next five possessions to stretch the lead back to 11 at 48-37 with 8:28 left, quieting the near-capacity crowd.

From that point on, the Eagles held off a stingy Hornet squad to earn their first win over Delaware State at the NCAA Division I level.  NCCU leads the all-time series 17-13.

Ingram led all scorers with 20 points, while Kidd finished the night with 13 points and 11 boards for his fourth double-double of the year, while Jay Copeland, Ray Willis and Chapman all contributed six points for the Eagles in the victory.

The maroon and gray cooled off in the second half going 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from the field to end the evening 53.8 percent (21-for-39) while shooting 3-for-12 (25.0 percent) from beyond-the-arc.

Delaware State (9-11, 4-2 MEAC) was led by the duo of Casey Walker and Amere May who both finished with 11 points, while All-MEAC performer Tahj Tate went 3-for-11 from the field to end the game with nine points.

NCCU (14-7, 7-0 MEAC) extends its winning streak to eight games and preps for a critical Monday night showdown against Maryland-Eastern Shore at 7:30 p.m. at Hycthe Arena in Princess Ann, Md.
