Bulls, Colome, rain combine to thwart Tides
Throwing mostly strikes led to good things for Alex Colome and the Durham Bulls on Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Colome’s excellent control helped slow Norfolk’s bats as the Bulls posted a 3-2 International League win in a game called by rain in the seventh inning.
In six innings of work for the Bulls, Colome (3-5) allowed seven hits as Norfolk had at least one runner on base in every inning. But the Tides only managed two runs because he didn’t walk a batter. Colome finished with eight strikeouts.
“This is really good,” Colome said. “Sometimes when I pitch I walk three or two. I don’t like to walk people. Today it felt really good because I struck out eight with no walks. All my pitches were working. First pitch strikes all the time.”
Colome’s night pleased Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo, who is dealing with an abundance of flux on his pitching staff due to promotions to the Tampa Bay Rays.
“He’s been pitching great with his cutter,” Montoyo said. “That’s a good team.”
Norfolk entered the game leading the International League in team batting average (.279). But the only two runs the Tides managed came on solo home runs by Travis Ishikawa in the fourth inning and Trayvon Robinson in the fifth inning.
But Durham’s early offense — one run in the second inning and two more in the third — meant those two homers weren’t enough for Norfolk to beat the Bulls.
Durham took the lead for good in the second inning, aided by one of Norfolk’s three errors.
Leslie Anderson smacked a lead off double before Brandon Guyer hit what appeared to be a routine groundball to the right side. But Norfolk first baseman Travis Ishikawa let the ball scoot under his glove for an error that allowed Anderson to score for a 1-0 Bulls lead.
Durham extended its lead to 3-0 in the third inning when Jason Bourgeois slammed a two-run home run to left field.
Colome held off the Tides until giving way to Steve Geltz, who pitched a perfect seventh inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and Wil Myers at the plate, the game was stopped when heavy rain showers hit downtown Durham. Play was not resumed and the game was called, giving the Bulls the win.
NOTES — Bulls left-handed relief pitcher Jeff Beliveau was promoted to the Tampa Bay Rays following Saturday night’s game….With the Bulls all season until Friday, left-handed pitcher Alex Torres picked up the win for Tampa Bay on Saturday at Baltimore. Torres pitched four hitless innings in relief in his first Major League appearance since 2011…To replace Torres, Durham received right-handed pitcher Austin Hubbard from Class A Charlotte (Fla.)…Bulls right-hander Jake Odorizzi has joined Torres in the big leagues today and will start Tampa Bay’s game at Toronto on Monday. Odorizzi is 4-0 with a 3.83 ERA with Durham this season…Durham and Norfolk complete their brief two-game series at 5:05 p.m. today. J.D. Martin (5-1, 3.63) will start for Durham with Zach Britton on the mound for the Tides.
