ECH boys finish 1st in 4-A Mideast Region


CARY — Hillside High School freshman sensation Marcus Krah won three individual events and East Chapel Hill the boys’ team title Saturday at Green Hope High School in the state 4-A Mideast Regional championships.

Jon Beyle won the shot put and discus to pace ECH. Beyle also ran a leg on the No. 2 4x100 relay team. Also starring for the Wildcats was William Buckley, who finished in the top three in the 100 and 200 and was on the top 3 ECH 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams, qualifying for the May 17-18 state championship meet at N.C. A&T in all four events.

Krah took home the 110 hurdles, long jump and triple jump titles.

Among other multiple state qualifiers were Riverside’s Marqualess Goldston (triple jump, 4x100, 4x200), Jordan’s Trevon McClary (long jump, triple jump), Riverside relay runners Darius Smiley, Marquis Burton and Tavares Tucker (4x100, 4x200) and ECH relay runners Edie Vandy and Jerry Ching (4x100, 4x200).

ECH won the team title by six points, 75-69, over No. 2 Apex. No other PAC-6 team finished higher than seventh.

The top three teams and top three finishers in individual and relay events advance to the state meet.

In the girls’ meet, five area athletes advanced to the May 17-18 state championship meet. East Chapel Hill’s Pegah Kamrani won the 3200 meters in 11:08.98, Régene Watson of Southern won the shot put at 39 feet, 7 inches, Northern’s Tamara Thorpe tied the leader at 5-2 in the high jump but finished second on number of jumps attempted. Also, Zuri White of Northern was second in the triple jump and Taleya Harris of Hillside was third in the 300 hurdles.

In the team race, won by Wakefield, Southern (8th) was the top local finisher.



Chapel Hill 7th, 11th in 3-A championships

GREENSBORO — The Chapel Hill boys took seventh place and the Chapel Hill girls 11th in Saturday’s state 3-A championships at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro.

Tristin Van Ord of Chapel Hill was the top local finisher, taking third in the 3200 meters and the Chapel Hill girls’ 3200-relay team of Anna Passannate, Tristin Van Ord, Emily Williams and Alexa Young finished second.

In the boys’ meet, Chris Reeder of Chapel Hill took third at 800 and 1600 meters and ran the anchor leg on Chapel Hill’s champion 3200 relay team that also included Tima Karginov, Peter Williams and Drew Roeber.



Carrboro girls, Cedar Ridge boys win 2-A regionals

WENDELL — The Cedar Ridge boys’ track team and the Carrboro girls won the NCHSAA 2-A Mideast Regional titles at Corinth Holders High School here Saturday.

Also finishing among the top three and qualifying for the May 17-18 state 2-A championship meet at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro were the Carrboro boys, who finished third.

Individual girls’ regional winners included Carrboro’s Grace Morken (800), Maysa Araba (1600), Diamond Tyson (shot put) and the Carrboro 4x400 and 4x800 girls relay teams as well as Libby Florence of Cedar Ridge (high jump) and South Granville’s Teshlyn Smith (triple jump).

Individual boys’ regional winners included Cedar Ridge’s Cameron Cooper (400), A.J. Tucker (1600, 3200) and Ethan Smith (pole vault) as well as Carrboro’s Scott Peretin (shot put, discus).



BOYS’ TENNIS

Freiburghouse falls in 2-A singles final


CARY—After three long rounds on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center, the boys’ singles final between Shelby’s Marshall Parker and Carrboro freshman Brian Freiburghouse won over in less than an hour.

Parker dispatched Freiburghouse 6-0, 6-0 to take the state 2-A singles title.

Freiburghouse, who plays No. 2 singles for Carrobor, had to survive a tough three-set match in the quarterfinals and then won the last match Friday night over Carrboro’s Max Fritsch, the Jaguars’ No. 1 player, to advance to Saturday’s finals.
