Belnome blasts Bulls by Buffalo

Jul. 12, 2014 @ 10:08 PM

The Durham Bulls hit Buffalo with five runs over the first two innings and rolled to a 7-2 International League win on Saturday night at Coca-Cola Field.

Vince Belnome and Justin Christian each homered for South Division-leading Durham, which collected 10 hits. Belhome was 4-for-4 with four RBIs.

Belnome slammed a three-run home run in the first inning, when the Bulls grabbed the lead for good against Buffalo starting pitcher P.J. Walters. Robby Price and Justin Christian drew walks to start the inning ahead of Belnome’s seventh home run of the season.

In the second inning, the Bulls pushed their lead to 5-0. Ray Olmedo singled and scored on a Price triple. Belnome drove in Price with an RBI-single.

After Buffalo got a run back when Clay Aldridge hit a solo home run off Bulls starter Matt Andriese, Durham added two more runs in the fifth inning to chase Walters.

After Christian started the inning with a home run, Belnome singled, took second on a Walters wild pitch and, one out later, moved to third on Jeremy Moore’s single.

With Durham runners on first and third, Raul Valdes replaced Walters and surrendered an RBI sacrifice fly to Wilson Betemit that put Durham up 7-1.

Walters (2-1) allowed seven runs over his 4 1/3 innings of work as the Bulls roughed him up for eight hits.

Meanwhile, Andriese pitched five innings for Durham. He allowed two runs on six hits while issuing two walks and striking out three.

Merrill Kelly pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit.

C.J. Riefenhauser pitched the final two innings for Durham, allowing no runs and only one hit.

The Bulls won for the fifth time in their last six games.

Durham and Buffalo play their final game before the All-Star break today with a 1:05 p.m.
