P.J. Hairston involved in altercation at Durham YMCA
Former North Carolina guard P.J. Hairston traded punches with Northern Durham High School rising senior Kentrell Barkley during a pick-up basketball game at a Durham YMCA on Sunday, his agent confirmed to Yahoo Sports.
Hairston's agent, Juan Morrow, said that Barkley threw the first punch and Hairston responded. Barkley denied throwing any punches on his Twitter account did not respond to a call seeking comment.
Hairston was taken with the 26th pick in the NBA Draft last month by the Miami Heat, who quickly traded the Greensboro native to the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets released a statement Sunday night stating that they are aware of an incident involving Hairston but they would not comment until they gathered additional information.
Hairston was arrested last summer in Durham and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and driving without a license, though the charges were eventually dropped. However, he was later declared ineligible for accepting impermissible benefits and missed the entire 2013-14 season.
