Wildcats escape with sweep of Jaguars

Justen Best’s desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer erased a 3-point Carrboro lead and Peter Rathmell’s try at a game-tying layup at the end of overtime rolled off as East Chapel Hill nipped the Jaguars 65-63 Wednesday night.
The OT victory was the second of the night for East Chapel Hill. The Wildcat girls clawed their way out of a 14-point third-quarter hole behind freshman point guard Ali Cyr-Scully’s 26 points for a 65-55 overtime win against Carrboro.
In the boys’ game, Carrboro led most of the way, including 41-37 after three quarters, but ECH wouldn’t go away, tying the game at 55 on Best’s one-handed heave from just outside the left elbow of the free throw circle at the fourth-quarter buzzer. Best’s shot followed a rebound by Jake Hilkey of a missed one-and-one attempt by Carrboro’s Marlin Johnson with 14 seconds to go
“What can you do?” Carrboro coach John Alcox said. “In the end, you have to make plays, and we didn’t. And we left a few points at the free throw line. If we’d shot better there, it would have made a difference.”
Hartsfield said the game-tying shot was set up for Malik McCray.
“I was shocked they didn’t foul us (on the last possession of regulation),” East Chapel Hill coach Ray Hartsfield said. “(McCray) got the pass but bobbled it and dribbled it a couple times. Best’s a senior, and he knew what we needed. He grabbed it and put it up and it went in.”
East Chapel Hill grabbed a five-point lead at 65-60 with less than a minute to play in overtime on a steal and layup by Tykeem Woodard, but Carrboro’s Matt MacKinnon answered with his fourth 3-pointer of the night with 26 seconds left.
Hilkey drove for a layup, but his shot was blocked by Carrboro’s James Scott with 14 seconds left, setting up Scott’s drive and failed layup try with one second to go.
Scott appeared to have an open lane to the hoop but couldn’t get the shot to fall. Hilkey got his ninth rebound on the play to seal the win.
In the girls’ game, East Chapel Hill trailed 33-19 late in the third quarter and 38-27 as the fourth quarter began. But the Wildcats, who had committed 18 turnovers in the first three periods, began to take care of the ball — and make shots.
Teara Holt, Adrienne Davis and Cyr-Scully each hit a 3-pointer, but ECH was back in the hole when Camille Gallagher knocked down a 3-pointer to give Carrboro a 51-49 lead with 38 seconds left in regulation.
Cyr-Scully hit a pair of free throws with 26 second left to tie it at 51, and the game went to overtime when Carrboro star Diamond Tyson missed on a 15-footer at the buzzer.
East Chapel Hill played most of the overtime period without three regulars — Sarah Towne, who went down with a leg injury, and Davis and center Jazmine Daye who both fouled out.
But with Cyr-Scully manning the point and scoring eight points (including 6-of-6 from the line) and junior forward Riley Foster adding stability, the Wildcats pulled away to the 65-55 win with a 14-4 run in the extra period.
