No. 1-ranked ECH heads title chase

East Chapel Hill, the state’s No. 1-ranked boys’ tennis program, will host Richmond County in the opening round of the state 4-A dual-match tennis championships today.

All opening matches are scheduled to be played at either 4 or 4:30 p.m. today.

East is one of eight area teams that qualified for the playoffs, which include 32-team fields — 16 East and 16 West — in each of four attendance qualifications.

Conference champions and runners-up were seeded Nos. 1 and 2 for the playoffs with some additions coming in as wild-card picks.

All the area teams in the field are No. 2 seeds except No. 1 Carrboro (Mid-State 2-A Conference champion) and No. 1 N.C. School of Science & Mathematics (Northern Carolina 2-A Conference champion).

Carrboro will host No. 2 seed North Johnston and NCSSM will host No. 2 seed Randleman. NCSSM plays its home matches at Whippoorwill Park in Durham.

Only PAC-6 4-A champion East Chapel Hill, Carrboro and NCSSM will open the playoffs at home, all other area teams will open on the road at No. 1 seeds.

In road openers, North-Central 1-A Athletic Conference No. 2 Voyager Academy will play Riverside (Martin), Northern Carolina 2-A No. 2 Durham School of the Arts will play Trinity, Big Eight 3-A No. 2 Chapel Hill will play Fayetteville Terry Sanford and PAC-6 4-A No. 2 Jordan will play Cape Fear.
