Knights ride long ball to win over visiting Bulls
Enny Romero gave up only three hits and two walks in six innings Friday night, but two of the hits and one of the walks came in the first, including a game-winning three-run home run by Charlotte’s Adrian Wilkins as the Durham Bulls fell 3-1.
Each pitching staff allowed only three total hits, including a home run, but Charlotte’s was Wilkins’ three-run blast.
Romero (2-3) gave up a leadoff single in the first to Gorkys Hernandez and followed with a walk to Carlos Sanchez. With two outs and runners on second and third, Romero was torched by Wilkins’ drive to right-center.
The Bulls’ offense was non-existent throughout. Charlotte starter Tommy Hansen (1-1) held Durham hitless through five innings while walking three and striking out six. Knights relievers Frank Francisco (2 innings, 1 hit, 3 strikeouts) and Mitchell Boggs (2 innings, 2 hits, 1 earned run) kept Durham at bay.
When the Bulls finally got their first hit, it didn’t make a dent. Kevin Kiermaier, the first batter Francisco faced after relieving Hansen in the top of the sixth, singled but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double on a strong throw from rightfielder Denis Phipps to shortstop Tyler Saladino. Ray Olmedo’s two-out infield single off Boggs in the eighth was the Bulls’ only other hit.
The Bulls’ bullpen was stalwart, too. Relievers Adam Liberatore and C.J. Riefenhauser each pitched a perfect inning to keep the Bulls technically alive.
But Durham was down to its last out before it finally got some production from its offense. Wilson Betemit reached Boggs for a solo homer to right to get the Bulls on the board.
But Boggs retired Jerry Sands for the final out and his first save of the season.
