Duke backs log 201 yards in scrimmage
Sophomore running back Jela Duncan ran for 48 yards and two touchdowns in the Blue Devils’ intrasquad scrimmage Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The Duke running game churned out 201 yards in all, led by 48-yard efforts from Duncan and senior Juwan Thompson, and a 45-yard performance from sophomore Shaquille Powell.
Duncan averaged 6.0 yards per rush on eight carries with scores from 4 and 8 yards, while Thompson averaged 5.3 yards per rush on nine carries. Powell’s six-carry performance included a 29-yard rush that was the longest of the day.
Redshirt junior quarterback Anthony Boone, the likely replacement for graduated starter Sean Renfree, completed 15 of 19 pass attempts for 89 yards and connected on his final seven throws. Redshirt freshman quarterback Thomas Sirk completed 16 of 21 pass attempts for 180 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. After starting the scrimmage 5 for 10 with a pair of interceptions, Sirk bounced back to hit 11 straight passes, including a 68-yarder to sophomore receiver Johndre Bennett and a 10-yard scoring strike to Thompson.
Bennett finished with three catches for a team-high 112 yards and a touchdown, including the 68-yard catch that set up Duncan’s second touchdown run and a 35-yard touchdown catch from junior quarterback Rob Collins.
Tight end Dan Beilinson grabbed three receptions for 29 yards, including a 19-yard catch, while sophomore Max McCaffrey grabbed three passes for 23 yards.
Defensively, redshirt freshman safety Corbin McCarthy had an interception, forced a fumble and deflected a pass and redshirt junior defensive end Jordan DeWalt-Ondijo blocked a field goal.
The Blue Devils will continue spring practice over the next three weeks in preparation for its spring football game at 4 p.m. April 13 at Wallace Wade Stadium.
