Andriese, 14-hit barrage lead Bulls past Braves 7-0

Jul. 18, 2014 @ 04:00 PM

The Durham Bulls extended their International League South lead over second place Gwinnett to 10-1/2 games Thursday night with a 7-0 win in the opener of a four-game series at Coolray Field.

It is the Bulls’ largest division lead of the season and was Durham’s fifth win in its last six outings, including four straight in a stretch that included a break for the Triple-A All-Star Game Wednesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Starter Matt Andriese (11-4) picked up the win for the Bulls, who staked him to a 2-0 lead on Jeremy Moore’s two-out, two-run double in the top of the first inning. Moore’s drive brought in Justin Christian (single) and Vince Belnome (walk).

Moore has hit safely in 15 of his first 16 games since being called up to Durham.

Braves’ starter Aaron Northcraft (0-3) took the loss.

The Bulls padded their lead in the top of the fourth on back-to-back-to-back singles by Mikie Mahtook, Christian (3 for 5) and Wilson Betemit (3 for 5) — all-star game DH Betemit driving in Mahtook for the third run. Ali Solis’ one-out RBI single made it 4-0.

Andriese wasn’t overpowering for the Bulls, scattering five singles and three walks through his 7-2/3 shutout innings, but took advantage of five double plays by his infield defense in the first six innings to keep Gwinnett at bay.

The Bulls added a pair of runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Solis and Hak-Ju Lee and another in the seventh on a Betemit single which plated Mahtook, who had doubled, for a 7-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Andriese got stronger as the game progressed, striking out the side in the seventh after striking out rehabbing Atlanta Braves catcher Evan Gattis to end the sixth. He had only struck out one batter in his first 5-2/3 innings.

Andriese got his sixth and final strikeout of the night when he retired Steven Lerud for the second out in the eighth, but walked Ozzie Martinez on his 94th pitch of the night and was replaced by reliever Adam Liberatore.

Liberatore retired all four batters he faced to close out the shutout.

NOTES — Bulls’ RHP Nathan Karns (6-5, 5.63) will face RHP Kanekoa Texeira (1-1, 5.06) in game two of this four-game series tonight at 7:05. The series continues here Saturday (7:05 p.m.) and Sunday (2:05 p.m.) before the Bulls return home for a Monday night game (7:05) against Rochester ... Gattis, 27, DH’ed for the Braves in the first game of an injury rehab assignment. Gattis, who went on Atlanta’s disabled list June 29 with a bulging thoracic disk, was hitting .290 with 16 home runs and 39 RBI in 63 games with Atlanta this season. ... Gwinnett is 15-30 since June 1, the worst record in Triple-A baseball over that span, but remain at least two games up on third place Norfolk in the IL South. ... Christian and Betemit each had three hits for the Bulls, whose 14-hit attack included multi-hit nights from Mahtook (2 for 5), Christian (2 for 4) and Solis (2 for 4). ... Andriese lowered his ERA to 3.19.
