Colome shines in Durham return as Bulls rout IronPigs 10-0

May. 31, 2014 @ 10:07 PM

A mistake of his own doing delayed Alex Colome’s Durham Bulls debut this season by two months.

He showed Saturday night he’s on his game nevertheless.

Starting for Durham after serving a 50-game suspension for use of a performance-enhancing drug, Colome allowed no runs over 5 ⅔ innings as the Bulls beat Lehigh Valley 10-0 before 10,021 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Originally slated to begin the year in Durham’s starting rotation, Colome was shelved on March 24 for a positive test showing use of Boldenone, a drug normally used on horses.

Last season, Colome made three starts for Tampa Bay, going 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA. in 14 starts for the Bulls last year, Colome was 4-6 with 3.07 ERA.

In between serving his suspension and pitching for Durham on Saturday night, the 25-year-old Colome made three starts for Class A Charlotte, allowing two runs and striking out 10 in 11 innings.

The hard-throwing right-hander also made a four-inning relief appearance for Tampa Bay last Monday against Toronto, allowing three hits and two runs.

He was far more successful with the Bulls before a big crowd at the DBAP.

Successfully mixing breaking pitches with his mid-90s fastball, which topped out at 96 mph on the stadium radar gun, Colome struck out nine Lehigh Valley batters. He allowed three hits, all singles, while walking three.

He struck out every Lehigh Valley batter at least once. While Colome failed to retire the IronPigs in order in any inning, he never allowed more than one baserunner in any inning.

Colome was on a pitch count of 90 and Durham manager Charlie Montoyo removed him after 84 pitches with one on and two outs in the sixth inning of a scoreless game.

As Colome walked off the mound and headed for the dugout, the home crowd gave him a loud ovation.

It was after that that the Bulls bats created noise that delivered a victory. Durham scored three times in the sixth inning and added six more runs in the seventh inning to turn a pitchers duel into a blowout.

Lehigh Valley helped Durham’s cause with some shoddy fielding.

After Hak-Ju Lee walked to start the sixth inning, Justin Christian reached when Lehigh Valley shortstop Ronny Cedeno failed to corral a ground ball. Wilson Betemit put Durham on top for good with an RBI single and Mike Fontenot gave the Bulls a 3-0 lead with a two-out, two-run single.

Betemit figured into Durham’s jumbo rally in the seventh with more help from the IronPigs. With two runners on and one out, Betemit hit a fly ball to short centerfield. But Lehigh Valley’s Leandro Castro dropped the ball for an error that allowed one run to score.

Jerry Sands followed with a three-run home run to left field giving Durham a 7-0 lead.

Mayo Acosta’s two-out, two-run single completed the six-run rally and lifted the Bulls lead to 9-0.

NOTES — The Bulls and IronPigs continue their series on Sunday with a 5:05 p.m. game. Left-hander Enny Romero (5-8, 6.08 ERA) will start for Durham with righty Sean O’Sullivan (2-4, 4.19)...Saturday night’s crowd of 10,021 is the second-largest attendance for Bulls game at DBAP this season. Only the May 4 game with Columbus, which drew 11,507 on special Star Wars theme night, has exceeded it.
