Tar Heels swept in four NCAA quarterfinal tennis matches
The freshmen seasons of North Carolina All-America women’s tennis players Jamie Loeb and Hayley Carter came to a close on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Loeb, the top seed and top-ranked player in the county, lost for only the fourth time all year as Lynn Chi from California, ranked 24th nationally pulled the upset by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Despite winning the opening set, Loeb completes her National Freshman of the Year season with a remarkable 53-4 record, the Tar Heel program record for wins.
Classmate Hayley Carter, the ACC Freshman of the Year, also lost on Saturday, dropping a three-set match to Virginia’s Danielle Collins 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Carter also reached the 50-win plateau in her first season at Carolina. She wraps up the year 50-7 in singles play.
In doubles, Loeb and Carter lost to Pieun Burgmans and Emily Fllickinger of Auburn 3-6, 6-2, 3-6 and UNC teammates Whitney Kay and Caroline Price lost to Duke’s fifth-ranked doubles team of Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar 7-5, 6-2.
