Louisville's sluggers do in the Bulls

May. 17, 2014 @ 10:25 PM

A pair of home runs ruined the night for the sold out crowd at Durham Bulls Athletic Park as the Louisville Bats defeated the Durham Bulls 5-1 on Saturday.

Ruben Gotay took a pitch delivered by Braulio Lara over the big left-field wall to give Louisville 3-1 lead in the seventh inning. Felix Perez then showed the Durham fans the door with a two-run homer in the ninth inning.

The Bulls’ woes entirely were their own as they left (at least 15 runners) stranded.

Before the game started, Jason Bourgeois, who played for the Bulls last season, received a championship ring for Durham’s 2013 Governor’s Cup championship.

It did not take for the former Bull to turn on Durham.

Bourgeois drove the third pitch he saw to left centerfield for a double to lead off the game.

The Bulls starting pitcher Nathan Karns appeared to be in store for a long day as he walked the next batter, Ruben Gotay, in five pitches.

But Karns and the Bulls escaped the inning unscathed as he struck out the next six batters he faced. Karns finished the game with 10 strike outs, the first time a Bulls pitcher to breach a double-digit strike outs total.

With two outs in the second inning, the Bulls were able to produce a run. Robby Price got things started with a line drive down the left-field line for a double. Ray Olmedo then advanced Price to third with an infield single.

Finally, Jayson Nix, who has played in parts of seven major league seasons for six different teams, including 18 games for Philadelphia this year, knocked in Price with a single to centerfield.

Nix signed with the Tampa Bay Rays and was assigned to the Bulls on Saturday.

NOTES — Bulls outfielder Kevin Kiermaier was elevated from the Bulls to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. ... The Bulls host Louisville at 5:05 p.m. today.
