Bulls' road streak comes to an end with 12-4 loss at Toledo

May. 27, 2014 @ 09:51 PM

The Bulls’ 5-0 road trip hit a pot hole Tuesday night as Durham fell behind early and often in a 12-4 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field here.

Toledo raked the Bulls for five runs in the first and three in the second as the Mud Hens bolted to an 8-2 lead.

The Mud Hens opened the bottom of the first with a triple, sacrifice fly and a solo homer by Eugenio Sanchez off Bulls’ starter Enny Romero (2-5). With two out, Romero gave up a single, a walk and a double steal that set the stage for a Wade Gaynor two-run single, Gaynor taking second on a throw home and scoring the fifth run moments later on a Luis Exposito RBI single.

Toledo starter Robbie Ray gave the Bulls a moment of hope as he walked Justin Christian and Mike Fontenot to open the second, but Fontenot was erased on a double-play ball by Ray Olmedo. Christian did scamper home with a run on a Ray wild pitch.

Romero continued to struggle in the second. He walked Ezequiel Carrera leading off and Carrero took third on a steal and a throwing error by Bulls catcher Mayo Acosta. Suarez doubled Carrero home with one out and Romero walked Mike Hessman.

The runners took second and third on a Romero wild pitch and a sac fly ended Romero’s night with Doug Mathis coming on in relief. Mathis gave up a two-out single to Tyler Collins to plate Hessman and make it 8-1.

The Bulls got a pair back in the top of the fourth on Wilson Betemit’s leadoff homer, a double by Christian and an RBI single by Olmedo to make it 8-3.

But Toledo got two right back off Mathis. Suarez got his third straight hit, a single leading off the bottom of the fourth. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases with none out and a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch scored two runs.

Christian hit his fourth homer in the sixth to get one back for the Bulls.

But gap widened to the final 12-4 score moments later when Mathis gave up a walk and a two-run blast to Exposito, his third of the year, in the bottom of the inning.
