Bulls edge Tides on Fontenot walk-off; magic number is 6

Aug. 21, 2014 @ 10:17 PM

In the ninth inning of a tie game against second-place Norfolk, Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo was thinking about classic television.

“There was a commercial (for Keep America Beautiful) that ended with the image of a native American, with a tear going down his cheek,” Montoyo said Wednesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. “If we didn’t score in that inning, that was going to be me.”

One night after the Bulls went hitless with runners in scoring position in a loss to Norfolk, the Bulls again struggled to find a clutch hit in a tie game against the Tides. Tim Beckham was thrown out at third to end the fourth inning. Justin Christian was stranded at second in the sixth.

Cole Figueroa started the ninth with a triple in the gap in right-center. For the second time in the game, the Tides intentionally walked all-star Mikie Mahtook to face Jeremy Moore.

Moore had homered to give the Bulls an early lead, but he struck out with Mahtook at third base and flied out to strand Christian. Again, in the ninth, Moore skied out to short left.

Reigning International League Player of the Week Mike Fontenot kept Montoyo from shedding a tear by looping a single up the middle, just out of reach of the second baseman. Figueroa scored to give the Bulls a walk-off 3-2 win.

The victory increased Durham’s lead to eight games over the Tides and reduced the Bulls’ magic number to six. Any combination of six Bulls wins or Tides losses will wrap up the South Division crown.

“It’s been a long time since I had a walk-off hit,” Fontenot said. “I remember in 2011, in San Francisco, I knocked in the winning run in the ninth, but that was a sacrifice fly, not a hit. I can’t remember the last hit.”

Lefthander Adam Liberatore (6-1, 1.66) earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of relief, capping a strong effort by the Bulls staff. Starter Matt Andriese struck out six in five innings of four-hit ball.

“Our pitching did a great job,” Montoyo said. “That’s a good team over there. To hold them to two runs, that’s a big win.”

C.J. Riefenhauser escaped a bases-loaded no-out jam in the sixth, striking out two batters on six pitches. After getting two strikes on the third batter, a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score.

“But he came back and struck the guy out on the next pitch,” Montoyo pointed out. “He did a good job to close out the inning. That’s what our relievers have done so well this year—minimizing damage.”

Josh Lueke, who blew a save on Saturday and struggled in a non-save situation on Sunday, entered the game in the seventh inning, retiring five batters and allowing just one hit. While no longer exclusively a closer, Montoyo said Lueke would still get the ball in some save situations. “We’ll play matchups,” Montoyo said. “If lefties are coming up, Liberatore will get the call.  If it’s righties, Lueke will.”

Of course, if the Bulls keep getting walk-off hits in the ninth, they won’t need a closer, and their manager won’t need to wipe away tears.

“You only get so many chances against a good team,” he said. “The ninth inning tonight, that was our chance.”
