Bulls walk off with 11-inning win over Charlotte
The Bulls were playing on fumes in the bottom of the 11th inning when Durham catcher Mayo Acosta bounced a double off the wall in right field that scored the only run Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park to give his ball club a 1-0 win over Charlotte.
“I've been struggling a little bit lately,” Acosta said.
That last plate appearance looked pretty good, though.
“We were due for a walk-off, that's for sure,” Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo said. “The last one was in April.
“I'm happy for Mayo Acosta. He's the guy that's always on the roster, off the roster, catching bullpens all the time, and he plays once in a while, and this time for him to get a big hit like that, it's awesome. It was perfect timing.”
The game was in the bag when Acosta rounded second base, and the Bulls were en route from the dugout to mob him. Acosta took off running into the outfield before conceding the chase. Bulls outfielder Ray Olmedo was bringing up the rear with a cooler of water he used to make a splash with his teammates.
It was remarkable what the win was able to do toward rejuvenating a tired bunch of Bulls who needed four hours and seven minutes to get past Charlotte, that field time compounded by four doubleheaders in seven days, a good bit of that on the road in New York to do business with Rochester.
“It's been tough. It's been a grind trying to cover innings, because we don't have enough pitching,” Montoyo said.
Neither starting pitcher allowed a hit. Charlotte’s Andre Rienzo threw into the fifth inning, and Durham's Nathan Karns lasted six and struck out 10 Knights.
Charlotte's no-hitter went out of the window in the fifth when Cole Figueroa singled off former Bull Frank de los Santos.
The first hit against the Bulls jumped off the bat of Josh Phegley, a ninth-inning single surrendered by Steve Geltz.
Charlotte loaded the bases in the 11th, but Durham’s Cory Burns (1-0) used three strikeouts to fight his way back to the dugout unharmed on the scoreboard.
Knights pitcher Erik Surkamp (3-5) gave up the hit to Acosta that won the game for the Bulls.
“I'm glad it was that kid,” Montoyo said.
For his trouble, Acosta got a celebratory pie to the face.
Durham’s magic number to clinch the title in the International League's South Division is 10. Any combination of 10 Bulls wins and Norfolk losses will secure the second straight division crown for Durham. That quest resumes today at 7:05 p.m. when Bulls pitcher Alex Colome (6-5, 3.65) climbs the hill against Bobby Doran (4-1, 6.11). ... Prior to tonight's game, Bulls' infielder Vince Belnome was called up to the parent Tampa Bay Rays, while pitcher Brandon Gomes was reassigned from the Rays to Bulls ...
