IronPigs rack up doubleheader sweep of Bulls
Timely hitting and solid relief pitching lifted Lehigh Valley to a doubleheader sweep of the Durham Bulls here Friday night.
The first-place Bulls lost the opener 6-5 and the nightcap 2-1. The seven-inning games included a makeup of Thursday night's rain postponement.
In the opener, the IronPigs ripped Bulls starter J.D. Martin for four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Martin, whose nine wins coming into the game were the most in the International League, was hurt by a leadoff error by Shelly Duncan at first that allowed Jermaine Mitchell to reach. The error was followed by an RBI double by Cody Asche, an RBI single by Darin Ruf and a two-run homer by Cody Overbeck.
The Bulls came back with a vengeance, tying it at 4-4 in the top of the second off former Chicago Cubs all-star pitcher Carlos Zambrano.
Vince Belnome reached on a leadoff error and Duncan and Leslie Anderson back-to-back singles loaded the bases. Brandon Guyer was hit by a pitch to drive in one run and Chris Gimenez drew a walk plating a second run. Mike Fontenot’s two-out single tied it.
Zambrano was pulled after two innings because of tightness in his pitching shoulder.
The Bulls took a short-lived lead in the third on back-to-back doubles by Belnome, leading off, and Duncan.
Ruf’s sacrifice fly off Martin in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 5-5.
Steve Geltz replaced Martin to start the bottom of the fifth and gave up a leadoff double to Josh Fields who eventually came in with the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Derrick Mitchell.
Geltz (3-3) was charged with the loss.
Former Wake Forest star righthander Mike McDougal (1-1), the third of four IronPigs pitchers in the game, pitched two innings of scoreless baseball to pick up the win. Mauricio Robles pitched the seventh and got the save, his second of the year.
In the nightcap, Bulls starter Cory Wade hit Asche with two down in the first and Ruf doubled him home to give Lehigh Valley an early 1-0 lead. It was the only hit Wade would give up before being replaced by Jeff Beliveau to start the bottom of the fourth.
The Bulls were held in check early by former A’s and Rockies pitcher Greg Smith, who signed a minor league deal with the Phillies on May 6. Smith allowed two hits in three scoreless innings before being replaced by another major league veteran, Zach Miner. Miner, who had Tommy John surgery in 2010, pitched for Detroit in 2006, including against the Cardinals in the 2006 World Series.
The Bulls mounted a rally in the fifth as Fontenot and Cole Figueroa reached on back-to-back one-out singles, but Miner got Jesus Flores to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Adam Liberatore relieved Beliveau to open the bottom of the sixth and was replaced by Will Inman with one out and a man on — Cesar Hernandez had reached on an error by Tim Beckham leading off. Inman gave up a two-out insurance run on a RBI double by Overbeck.
Luis Garcia, a recent AA call-up, replaced Miner to open the seventh. Anderson greeted Garcia with a leadoff double to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but Garcia got Gimenez on strikes and Fontenot on a ground out. He walked Figueroa with two down to put runners on the corners, then gave up an infield single to Flores to load the bases.
A wild pitch scored Anderson, but Garcia struck out Beckham to end the game.
Wade dropped to 2-1with the loss. Miner (5-5) got the win and Garcia picked up his first save.
NOTES — Opening game start Zambrano was the only National League pitcher to win at least 13 games in each year from 2003 to 2008. He went 7-10 last season after being traded by the Cubs to the Miami Marlins and signed a free agent minor league contract with the IronPigs’ parent Philadelphia Phillies on May 15. ... McDougal, who originally was drafted by Kansas City, has had extensive major league experience with the White Sox and Dodgers, most recently going 3-1 with a 2.05 ERA for the Dodgers in 2011. ... Bulls righthander Jake Odorizzi, who’s been called up by the parent Tampa Bay Rays three times this season, was scheduled to start on Friday but his start was pushed back to today’s 7:05 p.m. home game against Columbus. The Clippers will be in town through Tuesday with games at 5:05 p.m. Sunday and 7:05 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
