FROM STAFF REPORTS

BUFFALO, N.Y. — On a night when runs (six) were more plentiful than hits (four) for Buffalo, Mauro Gomez drove in five with a pair of late-inning home runs to lift the Bisons to a 6-3 win over the visting Durham Bulls Saturday.

The Bisons came back from a 3-0 deficit after being no-hit by Bulls starter Cory Wade (3 2/3) and reliever Adam Liberatore for 5 1/3 innings, scoring three in the bottom of the sixth to tie it and three more in the bottom of the eighth to seal it.

Gomez hit a two-run shot in the sixth and a three-run blast in the eighth to the delight of a sellout crowd of 18,025 — many slicing the night with glowing light sabers, some wearing theme-appropriate costumes — for the Bisons’ annual “Star Wars Night.”

The fans got a double bonus, a chance to see major league star shortstop Jose Reyes, in Buffalo on a rehabilitation assignment from the parent Toronto Blue Jays while coming back from an ankle injury.

The Bulls, coming off a series-opening 3-2 loss at Coca-Cola Field here Friday night, got on the board first on Saturday. Cole Figueroa led off the top of the third inning with a double and went to third when pitcher Chad Jenkins slipped while fielding a bunt by Brandon Guyer. Guyer, who reached on the play, was credited with a single.

Tim Beckham reached on a fielder’s choice and Bisons third baseman Jim Negrych was charged with an error on the play, overthrowing Buffalo’s catcher attempting to nab Figueroa at the plate.

Guyer scored on a double play ground ball by Vince Belnome for the second run.

The Bulls made it 3-0 in the top of the sixth when Chris Gimenez hit his first home run of the year with two down.

Buffalo got it all back in the bottom of the sixth when Reyes reached on an one-out error by Beckham, stole second and scored on a single by Kevin Pillar, Buffalo’s first hit of the game.

Steve Geltz, who had come on in relief of Liberatore to face Pillar, then gave up a game-tying two-run homer to left-center by Gomez.

Buffalo tacked on two more hits — and three more runs — to take a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Will Inman, making a winner of relief pitcher John Stilson (2-1) who pitched a scoreless eighth in his only inning of work.

Reyes (1 for 4) singled, Pillar walked and Gomez reached Inman for a three-run blast, his second of the game and 21st of the season, with one out.

Inman (0-2) took the loss after the Bulls were retired in order in the ninth by Joel Carreno, who earned his first save.

NOTES — Today’s Bulls starter, righthander Jake Odorizzi (5-1, 3.90 ERA, 55 1/3 IP, 48 H, 60 SO, 20 BB), returns to the Bulls rotation for his first Durham start since June 6. He’s appeared in two games for Tampa since then. Odorizzi has a 6.00 ERA in 18 innings in two stints with the parent Tampa Bay Rays this season. ... Buffalo’s Pillar has made his mark since making his Triple A debut Friday night. His two-run double plated the winning run in that game. ... In New York Saturday, recent Bulls call-ups Alex Colome, Alex Torres and Wil Myers made their mark in Yankee Stadium for the Rays. Colome got the start against Yankees star C.C. Sabathia and held his own, trailing 3-1 when lifted after 4 1/3 innings. He gave up five hits and five walks while striking out three and none of the runs the Yankees scored against him were earned. Torres relieved him and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, not allowing a base runner. Myers went 3 for 4, raising his average to .280 and, most notably, reached Sabathia for a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning with Tampa down 3-1. The Yankees rebounded from the 5-3 deficit to win 7-5.
