Xylina McDaniel scored 19 points and had six steals as No. 16 North Carolina used a key 19-2 second-half run to come back and beat Clemson 65-58 Sunday in each team’s Atlantic Coast Conference opener.

Waltiea Rolle added 16 points and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt finished with 15 points, six boards and six steals and five assists as UNC won its first league game for the 17th time in 19 years.

The Tigers’ zone defense stifled UNC (13-1) for much of the afternoon and the Tar Heels turned it over 10 times in the games opening five minutes. Clemson led 34-28 at the break and stretched that lead to 10 early in the second half.

The Tar Heels trailed 43-35 after Chancie Dunn’s layup for Clemson. McDaniel responded with a layup with 12:20 left, sparking the 19-2 run that put UNC up 54-45 with 6:23 to play.

McDaniel scored eight points during the run, which came amid 15 consecutive missed shots by the Tigers.

Clemson (4-8) made just 4 of 21 field goals over the game’s final 14 minutes.

Still, Clemson would not go quietly, however, and the Tigers were back within two at 58-56 with two minutes to play. The UNC lead was three when McDaniel, who had taken a hard fall and was trailing the play, picked the pocket of Charmaine Tay and went the distance for a layup to put UNC up 61-58.

Ruffin-Pratt and Krista Gross each made a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to ice the game for UNC.

Clemson won the rebounding battle, 48-35, but could not overcome a 20-point difference in points off turnovers. Carolina had a season-high 22 steals and won for the fourth time this season when trailing at halftime.

North Carolina forced 35 Clemson turnovers and converted for 36 points.

Nikki Dixon led Clemson with 22 points while Quinyotta Pettaway had 10 points and a career-best 18 rebounds.
