It wasn’t as easy as it could have been, but overall No. 1 seed North Carolina won its opening game in the NCAA baseball tournament’s Chapel Hill Regional.

Chaz Frank had three hits and freshman Trent Thornton had six strikeouts in the final two innings as the Tar Heels defeated No. 4 seed Canisius 6-3 Friday night at Boshamer Stadium.

UNC (53-8) had two runners thrown at home, but the Golden Griffins (42-16) stranded 14 runners and left the bases loaded three times.

The Tar Heels will now face No. 3 Towson (30-28) in the winner’s bracket today at Boshamer (6:05 p.m., ESPN3.com), while Canisius will play No. 2 Florida Atlantic (39-21) in an elimination game at 1:05 p.m.

Towson opened the event with a 7-2 upset win over FAU on Friday afternoon.

In Raleigh, South Granville High School’s quest for a state 2-A softball championship took a hit when the Vikings lost to West Stanly 8-5 in game one of the championship series.

The best-of-three series continues at Walnut Creek Softball Complex with game two at 11 a.m. today. If South Granville wins that game, a deciding game three will be played at 2 p.m.
