Tar Heels eliminated from NCAA tourney by Long Beach State

A roller-coaster postseason for North Carolina ended Monday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament’s Gainesville regional.

With a mix of speed and power, Long Beach State finished UNC’s season with a 12-5 win over the Tar Heels at McKethan Stadium.

The game, which started at 1 p.m. on Sunday, took more than 24 hours to complete due to a pair of rain delays. The second delay forced the game to be suspended Sunday night with UNC trailing 5-4 in the top of the seventh inning.

The loss dropped UNC to 35-27 for the season.

“We had a lot of adversity going into the season,” UNC right fielder Tyler Ramirez said. “It’s very disappointing, how it ended today, but I think we did some good things, we did some bad things. But the overall outcome is disappointing.”

The Tar Heels couldn’t carry their momentum from a 5-2 upset of No. 2 national seed Florida on Saturday throughout the regional.

“I think we got a lot out of our kids this season,” UNC coach Mike Fox said. “Some good experience for our young players to get into a regional, play in a regional, win in a regional, lose in a regional. It’s experience and you just have to go through it.”

When play resumed Monday, Long Beach State had runners on first and second with one out. The Dirtbags stayed true to their aggressive play throughout the regional, executing a double steal on the first pitch from UNC reliever Spencer Trayner to put runners on second and third. Both runners got a huge jump on the play.

“We had talked about that,” Fox said. “I didn’t think they would run with their cleanup batter up there, but we thought they might run. Usually, Spencer is pretty quick to the plate. We didn’t do a good job there.”

That forced Trayner to intentionally walk Long Beach State cleanup hitter Richard Prigatano to load the bases. Third baseman Michael Hill followed with a two-RBI single on a 1-2 pitch, extending Long Beach State’s lead to 7-4.

Righty Benton Moss, UNC’s starter Saturday against Florida, relieved Trayner and got out of the inning. UNC tried to answer with a rally in the bottom of the seventh, but after Tyler Ramirez’ RBI double cut Long Beach State’s lead to 7-5, pinch hitter Adam Pate struck out with runners on first and third to end the inning.

Fox said Ramirez turned his ankle while rounding first on the double and likely would have been on third with a stand-up triple if not for the injury.

“We followed that with an infield single and it could have been 7-6 at that point, and who knows what could have happened?” Fox said. “But that’s part of baseball.”

Long Beach State put the game away with five runs in the top off the ninth, all charged to Moss. The Dirtbags (34-25), who came into the game with just six home runs all season, finished the game with two home runs and four stolen bases.

UNC had 13 hits, but left 11 runners on base.

“We saw the ball well and put some good swings on the ball,” Ramirez said. “Just maybe the lack of timely hits with runners in scoring position probably hurt us the most.”
