Duke’s Payne, UNC pair to train with U-20 team

Duke incoming freshman Toni Payne and North Carolina’s Summer Green and Amber Munerlyn will head to Carson, Calif., from Aug. 4-12 to train with the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center at StubHub Center.
Payne will miss the first six days of preseason practice with Duke, while the USA will face Japan on Aug. 8 and on Aug. 11. 
Payne, who was the 2013 Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year, scored 47 goals and registered 35 assists this past season, leading Oak Mountain High School (22-4-2) to the Class 6A state championship game. Payne was the 2012 Birmingham News Player of the Year. She concluded her prep soccer career with 141 goals and 92 assists.
The USA is preparing for the eight-team CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament that will send the top three finishers to 2014 FIFA U-20 World Cup Women’s World Cup in Canada. The qualifying competition will be held from Jan. 9-19 in the Cayman Islands.
