North Carolina, the No. 1 overall national seed, twice came close to suffering a shocking elimination Monday night at Boshamer Stadium.
Instead, FAU found out why the Tar Heels are the only baseball team in the country without a losing streak after UNC rallied for a 12-11 victory with a walkoff bases-loaded single by senior Cody Stubbs in the 13th inning to win the Chapel Hill Regional.
UNC reliever Chris McCue came on in the 10th inning, striking out four of the first six hitters he faced but gave up the go-ahead three-run homer to Levi Meyer in the 12th before the Tar Heels rallied for the second time to extend the rain-delayed game.
Tyler Rocklein hit a grand slam with two outs as part of a six-run ninth inning to give Florida Atlantic an 8-6 lead, but the Tar Heels rallied to tie it with a two-run single by Mike Zolk.
UNC, the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, advanced to the super regionals for the seventh time since 2003 and will host South Carolina next weekend. The winner of that best-of-three series will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
