The Durham Bulls were cruising along Tuesday night in the opening game of their series against the Gwinnett Braves at Coolray Field, even adding an insurance run on a homer by Chris Gimenez in the top of the ninth.
But the Braves spoiled Durham closer Kirby Yates’ bid for a save in the ninth by evening the score, then walked off with a 3-2 victory in the 10th on a throwing error by shortstop Tim Beckham.
Adam Liberatore (4-3), the Bulls’ fourth pitcher of the night, took the loss on the mound. Catcher Jesus Flores led Durham, which had only six hits agains the Knights’ staff, with a pair of singles.
The loss spoiled a strong five-inning performance by Durham starter Jake Odorizzi, who gave up three hits while notching four strikeouts. Brandon Gomes and Steve Geltz came on in relief, each throwing a hitless inning before giving way to Yates.
In the eighth inning, Yates retired the side in order.
Gimenez, whose walkoff home run Sunday night gave the Bulls a 5-2 win over the Charlotte Knights, ripped a one-out blast to left-center for his third homer of the season and a 2-0 Durham lead in the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Gwinnett’s Philip Gosselin ripped a one-out double to right and scored on a single by Stefan Gartrell. Matt Pagnozzi’s two-out single moved Gartrell to third, and pinch hitter Alden Carrithers drew a walk to load the bases.
A wild pitch by Yates allowed Gartrell to tie the score before Jose Constanza struck out to extend the game.
The Bulls went down in order in the 10th, and Liberatore came on to pitch the bottom of the inning. Brandon Boggs singled to right with one out, and Beckham’s throwing error on a two-out grounder by Gosselin allowed Gwinnett reliever Wirfin Obispo (2-3) to take the victory.
Pagnozzi led the Braves with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate.
The Bulls got on the board in the fifth inning with a walk to Evan Frey and an RBI triple by Kevin Kiermaier off Gwinnett starter Kameron Loe.
