Wilkins, Knights slip past Bulls in finale

Aug. 19, 2013 @ 10:23 PM

Andy Wilkins’ leadoff home run in the bottom of the second was all the offense the Charlotte Knights would need to beat the Durham Bulls 1-0 on Monday night in International League action.

It was the Bulls’ final regular-season game at Knights Stadium, as the team will move into a new facility in downtown Charlotte for the 2014 season.
That one pitch spoiled an otherwise strong night for Bulls starter Jake Odorizzi (8-6), who gave up four hits in seven innings while posting seven strikeouts, including the final three batters he faced.
Cole Figueroa, Vince Belnome and Mike Fontenot had a pair of hits each for Durham (80-50), as the Bulls’ magic number for clinching the South Division title remains at three. The Norfolk Tides (69-62) posted a 7-2 win at Columbus on Monday and closed to 11.5 games of Durham in the South Division race.
Durham had its best chance to score in the top of the second when Belnome led off with a double and went to third on a single to right by Fontenot. But the Bulls were unable to force the run across as Charlotte starter Erik Johnson (3-1) retired the next three batters.
The Bulls also were the victims of three inning-ending double plays by the Knights’ defense, though Durham also turned a pair.
NOTES — The Bulls host Charlotte for a two-game series beginning today, when they will retire the jersey of Chipper Jones in a pregame ceremony. Jones played for the Bulls when they were a Class-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. ... Mike Montgomery (7-6, 4.65 ERA) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Bulls, while the Knights will start Jason Berken (10-11, 3.93). Durham will have Merrill Kelly (7-3, 3.12) starting Wednesday’s game against Charlie Leesman (3-2, 3.66).
