Cole Figueroa pounded out three hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead four Durham batters with multiple hits as the Bulls beat the Charlotte Knights 5-1 on Wednesday night at Knights Stadium.
Brandon Guyer, Leslie Anderson and Vince Belnome added a pair of hits each for Durham. Belnome was supposed to have the night off but entered the game as a pinch runner in the sixth when Anderson was hit by a pitch.
Durham starter Matt Buschmann (3-0) went six innings, scattering three hits while striking out six and walking two batters. Josh Lueke came on in the eighth and recorded his 10th save of the season.
In the first, Guyer ripped a two-out double to center and scored on a single by Anderson for a 1-0 lead by the Bulls.
Buschmann gave up a leadoff double to Blake Tekotte in the bottom of the inning, then settled down to retire the next three batters.
Charlotte tied the score when Josh Phegley opened the second with his 15th home run of the season. Again, Buschmann got out of the inning without further damage, recording a pair of strikeouts.
Anderson opened the fourth with a double, but he was stranded at third with three groundouts to end the threat.
The Bulls regained the lead in the sixth, as Anderson was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Belnome came on as a pinch runner, but he was out at second on a grounder by Duncan. With two out, Chris Gimenez singled to left before Figueroa single to center drove in Duncan for 2-1 lead.
Durham added an insurance run in the eighth with a double by Belnome and a two-out single to right by Figueroa for a 3-1 advantage.
Lueke relieved Adam Liberatore with one out and one on in the bottom of the eighth and wrapped a pair of walks around a strikeout to load the bases. But Lueke struck out Mike McDade on four pitches to end the threat.
Durham posted a pair of runs in the ninth, as Tim Beckham rapped a one-out single and took second on a throwing error. Guyer singled to left to move Beckham to third, Belnome followed with an RBI single. Duncan’s double to left drove in Guyer to set the final margin.
In the bottom of the inning, Phegley walked and Andy Wilkins singled before Lueke struck out Lars Anderson, Tyler Greene and Jim Gallagher to end the game.
