Whew! Central survives D-II St. Aug's 23-20 in double OT

N.C. Central needed double overtime and a 19-yard field goal from Oleg Parent to finally put away a visiting Saint Augustine’s team that showed up at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium on Saturday with a lot of swagger and backed it up.

NCCU won 23-20.

“Somebody said we were supposed to lose 45 to nothing,” Saint Augustine’s coach Michael Costa said, alluding to the Falcons’ NCAA Division II status.

NCCU plays Division I ball on the Football Championship Subdivision level, a notch above Saint Augustine’s, although the Falcons were in the driver’s seat for much of the fourth quarter until the last minutes when Eagles quarterback Jordan Reid grabbed the wheel, steering with his feet.

“The fight was outstanding by him in leading us to victory late in the overtime,” NCCU interim coach Dwayne Foster said moments after his first win as a college head coach. “Jordan Reid is special.”

Reid was putting in work, throwing for 253 yards and two touchdowns.

Yet it’s what Reid did on the ground that made the difference in NCCU’s home opener, running the ball 21 times, more attempts than any ball carrier in the game. He took a good number of hits, sacked five times and netting just 45 yards after 36 yards of lost real estate was factored in. But the redshirt senior got those tough yards when they really counted, sustaining drives and scoring during crunch time.

“I just told myself I’m going to lead my team to this victory, and we’re not going to lose this game,” Reid said.

Saint Augustine’s had both the ball and a 7-6 lead in the fourth quarter. The Falcons put together a long drive, milking the clock before quarterback A.J. Gilford threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Brian Richards, a little fade near the end-zone sticks.

The Falcons went for a two-point conversion to cushion their lead in case NCCU scored. A Saint Augustine’s penalty nixed that, setting up a longer point-after attempt, but the kick was botched.

NCCU had 6:18 left in regulation to work some magic. The Eagles ended up punting but got the ball back with 2:34 showing on the clock.

The clock blared 29.4 on fourth-and-one with the ball on the Saint Augustine’s 2 when Reid spotted wide receiver Adrian Wilkins in the end zone for a scoring toss.

Parent’s point-after kick tied the game at 13.

Reid didn’t trust the curl route that wide receiver Marvin Poole was on, but Wilkins was waiting in the cut.

“I just popped it out there to him to lead us to overtime,” Reid said.

Saint Augustine’s didn’t mess around in the first overtime session. On second down, speedy, rangy receiver Jermaine Jones (6-4, 195), a redshirt senior, gave NCCU freshman defensive back Hakiem Swann (5-8, 165) a little grown-man shove to position himself for a 25-yard touchdown reception.

Michael Lima’s point-after kick was good.

Advantage Falcons.

But on came the Eagles, namely Reid, scrambling for 12 yards to set up his 4-yard touchdown run.

Parent’s extra point sent the game into double overtime, when NCCU freshman Michael Jones intercepted Gilford on NCCU’s 18 and almost scored before getting tripped up after an 80-yard return.

“We were just in cover two. It was two receivers and a safety,” Jones said. “I guess the quarterback wanted to throw to him, and I was right there just to intercept the ball and try to get all the way to the end zone.”

Overtime rules gave NCCU the ball on the Falcons’ 25. Reid missed a shot in the end zone when his pass bounced out of Wilkins’ hands on third-and-two, leading to Parent’s walk-off boot.

“Our guys showed a lot of poise, a lot of heart, a lot of resolve,” Foster said. “We put ourselves in tough situations throughout the football game, yet we fought back late in the third and fourth quarters and did a hell of a job in overtime to get the win.”
