NCCU tops Howard for fifth win in a row

Jan. 22, 2013 @ 01:53 PM

N.C. Central coach LeVelle Moton always talks about the mighty Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and how tough it is to get wins in the league.
Well, he’s making it look pretty easy.
NCCU had its way with Howard in a 71-36 win in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on Monday.
The Eagles are on a five-game winning streak and are undefeated in the MEAC.
“We’re hot right now,” NCCU point guard Emanuel Chapman said.
Not so fast, Moton said.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Moton said. “We were fortunate tonight. We didn’t get their best shot. That’s a good team. They’re big, and they’re physical, but we did some things early, and I guess we kind of rattled them and threw them off guard a little bit. We mixed up some zone with some presses. We just didn’t want them to get comfortable, because they’re so big and physical and athletic that they’ll hurt you on the backboards.”
Howard never got in a groove, shooting 25.5 percent from the field. It’s hard to win like that, Howard coach Kevin Nickelberry said.
N.C. A&T spanked Howard 61-37 on Saturday.
“We’re not making shots,” Nickelberry said. “You’ve got to make shots.”
Free throws count, too, and Howard missed 11 of them.
Howard (4-16, 1-5 MEAC) just isn’t a very good squad right now, Nickelberry said.
On the other bench, the Eagles were real warm, shooting 69.6 percent from the field in the first half before cooling down to finish at 52.4 percent.
NCCU’s Stanton Kidd (12 points) led all scorers and was among four Eagles in double figures. Chapman (10 points, 5 assists) and backup point guard Drimir Ferguson (11 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds) were effective in the backcourt, and NCCU big man Jay Copeland (10 points) was handling business down low.
“We made some shots. That’s the key,” Moton said. “It’s a make-or-miss league. You make some shots, everything is easy. Those things rim out, we’re looking at each other and we’re struggling.”
Simuel Frazier put eight points on the scoreboard for Howard, and that actually led the scoring output for the Bison.
NCCU senior Ray Willis said the Eagles’ coaches are putting him and his teammates in positions to win with excellent scouting reports.
“By the time we go in the game, we feel as if we know the players, because we go over them so much in practice,” Willis said.
Chapman said NCCU (11-7, 4-0 MEAC) is playing some real good ball but added that the Eagles will continue to take it one game at a time.
“We’re using our team as a house, and we’re going to start with one brick, and we’re not going to skip any bricks,” Chapman said. “We’re not going to put any sloppy bricks up. We’re trying to take it one brick at a time.”
